Chapter 6: The Truth Buried Beneath the Foundation
Harrison read the letter three times.
Each time, the words became more disturbing.
Daniel,
You think you are investigating Emily Carter’s disappearance.
You are wrong.
You are investigating why she was allowed to disappear.
The person who took Emily did not act alone.
The foundation protected them.
The police protected them.
And you protected them without knowing.
Harrison lowered the paper.
His hands tightened.
Someone had been watching his investigation from the beginning.
Someone inside the system.
Someone who knew every move he made.
Sarah stepped into the room.
“What did you find?””
Harrison handed her the letter.
She read silently.
Then looked up.
“Daniel…”
“I know.””
“This could mean someone in the department is involved.””
He nodded.
“And they know Lily is alive.””
Sarah looked around the hidden room.
“What is this place?””
Harrison searched through the desk.
“Emily’s backup.””
Inside the drawers were hundreds of documents.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Photographs.
The truth Emily had risked everything to uncover.
Sarah picked up one file.
“Daniel.””
He turned.
She showed him a photograph.
It was Emily.
Standing beside another person.
A person Harrison recognized.
His own former partner.
Detective Mark Collins.
Harrison stepped back.
“No.””
The photograph showed Emily and Collins entering the Whitmore Foundation archive together.
The date was three days before Emily disappeared.
Sarah looked at him carefully.
“You trusted him.””
Harrison said nothing.
Because he had.
Mark Collins had been the person beside him during the entire investigation.
The person who comforted him.
The person who told him they would find Emily.
The person who now appeared to be connected to everything.
Then Harrison’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
“Where is Lily?””
A voice replied.
“Still protecting your missing girl, Daniel?””
Harrison froze.
He knew that voice.
“Mark.””
Detective Mark Collins laughed softly.
“You finally figured it out.””
Harrison’s face hardened.
“Where is she?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
“What question should I ask?””
A pause.
Then Collins said:
“Ask why Emily trusted me.””
Harrison gripped the phone.
“You were involved.””
“Involved?””
Collins laughed.
“That word makes everything sound simple.””
“Where is Lily?””
“You’ll find her.””
“When?””
“When you understand what Emily discovered.””
Harrison’s patience broke.
“You kidnapped a child.””
“No.””
The voice became colder.
“I protected her from the people who want her dead.””
Harrison looked at Sarah.
Neither of them moved.
“Who?””
Collins was silent.
Then he said:
“The same person who has been standing in front of you the entire time.””
The call ended.
Harrison immediately called back.
No answer.
Only silence.
Hours later, Lily sat in the abandoned building where Thomas had left her.
She had stopped being afraid.
She had started searching.
Her mother always hid important things in ordinary places.
A drawer.
A book.
A photograph.
So Lily looked around.
Near the wall, she found a loose wooden board.
Behind it was a small metal box.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a letter.
A letter with her name.
*For Lily.*
She held it against her chest.
Then slowly opened it.
Her mother’s handwriting filled the page.
My sweet Lily,
If you are reading this, then I’m sorry.
I’m sorry I couldn’t come home.
But I need you to know something.
I never left you.
I was trying to protect you.
The tears came instantly.
Lily continued reading.
The truth is, the person you trust most is not who you think.
The person who helped me hide was someone you see as family.
Someone who promised to protect you.
Lily stopped.
A sound came from behind her.
A door opening.
She quickly folded the letter.
A shadow appeared.
Then a voice whispered:
“Lily.””
She knew that voice.
She had heard it her entire life.
Her heart stopped.
May you like
Because the person standing in the doorway was the last person she expected.
Her own father.
