Chapter 14: The Enemy No One Saw

The investigation changed overnight.

The entire city woke up to the biggest scandal in decades.

The Whitmore Foundation.

The missing people.

The secret accounts.

The hidden evidence.

Every newspaper wanted the story.

Every news channel demanded answers.

But Daniel Harrison ignored all of it.

Because he had one mission.

Find who was behind everything.

Not the person everyone blamed.

The person nobody saw.

The memory card was analyzed by experts.

The results were shocking.

The files had been altered.

Someone had removed critical information.

Someone had tried to erase the truth.

But they missed one thing.

Emily Carter.

Emily had always planned ahead.

She left hidden copies.

Messages.

Clues.

A trail.

The kind of trail only someone who truly knew her would understand.

Daniel sat across from Emily in a quiet room.

For the first time, they were alone.

“I’m sorry.””

Emily looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not finding you sooner.””

Emily shook her head.

“You were looking.””

“I failed.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You were searching for the wrong enemy.””

Daniel looked down.

“Everyone I trusted lied.””

Emily softened.

“Sometimes people lie because they’re evil.””

A pause.

“Sometimes they lie because they’re afraid.””

Daniel thought about Evelyn.

About Richard.

About everyone.

“Which one was she?””

Emily didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Outside, Evelyn sat in custody.

But she had stopped fighting.

That worried Daniel.

People like Evelyn didn’t surrender easily.

He visited her.

She looked at him through the glass.

“You found it.””

Daniel sat.

“I found enough.””

She smiled sadly.

“You always were your father’s son.””

“I’m not here for approval.””

“I know.””

A silence passed.

Then Evelyn said:

“I never wanted you to know.””

“Know what?””

“The truth about your family.””

Daniel stared.

“You mean the truth you buried?””

“No.””

Her eyes became serious.

“The truth someone else buried.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Your grandfather.””

Daniel froze.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

The world shifted again.

Evelyn continued.

“Before the foundation. Before Thomas. Before me.””

She took a breath.

“There was another organization.””

“What organization?””

“One that controlled powerful people.””

Daniel stared.

“And my grandfather was part of it?””

“He created it.””

Daniel felt sick.

His family history was becoming a chain of secrets.

“How much did you know?””

“Not enough.””

She looked away.

“Your grandfather trained people to control information.””

“And you learned from him.””

“Yes.””

For the first time, Evelyn looked ashamed.

“I thought I was escaping his shadow.””

“But you became him.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel left the room with more questions than answers.

Then he received a call.

Richard.

“Daniel.””

His voice sounded urgent.

“Where are you?””

“At the station.””

“You need to leave.””

“Why?””

“Because I found something.””

Daniel stopped walking.

“What?””

Richard lowered his voice.

“The original founder of the organization.””

Daniel waited.

“Your grandfather didn’t work alone.””

“Who was with him?””

A long pause.

Then Richard answered.

“Someone still alive.””

Daniel’s heart sank.

“Who?””

Richard whispered a name.

A name Daniel never expected.

A name that made the entire investigation suddenly make sense.

“The person who has been guiding Evelyn.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Who?””

Richard said:

“Detective Mark Collins.””

Daniel froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice was full of fear.

“It means Collins wasn’t working for Evelyn.””

A pause.

“He was controlling her.””

Before Daniel could respond, gunshots exploded through the phone.

“Dad?””

No answer.

“Dad!””

Silence.

Then the call ended.

Daniel ran.

Because after everything he had discovered…

He knew one thing.

The final truth was still hidden.

And someone was willing to kill to keep it buried.
