Chapter 10: The Son Who Chased the Wrong Enemy

Daniel Harrison had spent his entire life believing he understood his mother.

Evelyn Harrison was disciplined.

Brilliant.

Respected.

The kind of person who entered a room and immediately commanded attention.

She taught him how to read people.

How to find lies hidden between words.

How to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves.

And now he was discovering the cruelest possibility of all.

Everything she taught him was being used against him.

He drove alone to the location she sent.

An abandoned private estate outside the city.

The same property where he had spent summers as a child.

The same place where his mother used to tell him stories about justice.

Back then, he thought she was preparing him to become a good detective.

Now he wondered if she was preparing him to become useful.

The gates opened before he arrived.

She had been expecting him.

Daniel stepped inside.

The house looked exactly the same.

Old paintings.

Dark wooden floors.

A grandfather clock ticking in the hallway.

Memories surrounded him.

But they felt like someone else’s memories now.

“Daniel.””

Her voice came from the living room.

Evelyn stood near the fireplace.

She looked older than he remembered.

But not weaker.

Never weaker.

“You came.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew I would.””

A faint smile appeared.

“You always wanted answers.””

“I wanted the truth.””

She nodded.

“That’s why I’m proud of you.””

His expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t pretend this is some lesson.””

Evelyn sighed.

“You sound like your father.””

Daniel froze.

“My father?””

She walked toward the fireplace.

“You never asked enough questions about him.””

“Because you told me he left.””

“He did.””

“Why?””

A long silence followed.

Then Evelyn said:

“Because he found out who I really was.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I had a choice.””

Daniel stared.

“You chose yourself.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I chose survival.””

The anger inside him grew.

“Emily Carter almost died because of you.””

Evelyn’s face changed slightly.

“Emily was reckless.””

“She was trying to expose you.””

“She was trying to destroy everything I built.””

“Your crimes?””

“My work.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Money laundering. Missing people. Cover-ups.””

Evelyn didn’t deny it.

That was somehow worse.

“You think the world is simple,” she said.

“Good people and bad people.””

She stepped closer.

“But power doesn’t work that way.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“No. People like you make it that way.””

For the first time, Evelyn looked hurt.

“You really believe I’m a monster.””

“You proved it.””

She turned away.

Then she said quietly:

“Your father is alive.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

Evelyn looked back.

“That was the truth Emily never told you.””

His mind raced.

“My father disappeared twenty years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Because of you?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Because of Emily.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“That makes no sense.””

Evelyn walked to an old cabinet and removed a file.

She placed it on the table.

Inside was a photograph.

His father.

Standing beside Emily Carter.

Daniel stared.

“No.””

Evelyn watched him.

“Your father and Emily knew each other long before you met her.””

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying the story you were given was incomplete.””

Daniel flipped through the file.

Letters.

Reports.

Old documents.

Then he saw a name.

Richard Harrison.

His father.

The last page contained a handwritten note.

*If anything happens to me, Daniel must never know.*

His hands trembled.

“Who wrote this?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Because the truth was already forming.

The door behind him suddenly opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakable.

Daniel stopped breathing.

The world seemed to freeze.

Because the man standing there was the face from every childhood memory.

The man he had mourned for twenty years.

His father.

Richard Harrison.

Alive.

Richard looked at him with tears in his eyes.

“Daniel.””

Daniel couldn’t speak.

Evelyn watched silently.

May you like

Because she knew something Daniel didn’t.

His father’s return would change everything.
