Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Plan

The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.

I had barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Emily’s voice.

*The person who could make the judge believe anything.*

For months, I thought Sarah was acting alone.

Then I thought it was David.

Now I realized something much worse.

They were only pieces of something bigger.

I made coffee but forgot to drink it.

I stood in the kitchen staring at the same spot for ten minutes.

Emily walked in wearing her school uniform.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Good morning.””

She tilted her head.

“You didn’t sleep.””

It wasn’t a question.

I smiled.

“Did you?””

She looked away.

“No.””

That hurt.

Because we were both pretending.

I packed her lunch.

She packed her backpack.

Two people trying to act normal after their lives had been turned upside down.

Before leaving, Emily stopped at the door.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“If Mommy goes to jail, does that mean I won’t have a mommy anymore?””

The question caught me completely off guard.

I knelt down.

“Emily, listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“Your mom is still your mom.””

“But she hurt me.””

“Yes.””

“Can someone hurt you and still love you?””

I thought about Sarah.

About David.

About every lie told by someone who claimed they were protecting us.

“Yes,” I said quietly.

“But love doesn’t make hurting someone okay.””

Emily nodded slowly.

That answer seemed to matter.

After dropping her off, I went straight to Michael’s office.

He already had another update.

“You found something.””

He nodded.

“We identified the person Sarah was talking to.””

I sat down.

“Who?””

Michael opened his laptop.

A photo appeared on the screen.

A man in a suit.

I recognized him instantly.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Michael watched my reaction.

“You know him?””

I stared at the picture.

“Yes.””

The man was Daniel Reeves.

The family court consultant Sarah hired before the custody hearing.

The same man who claimed he was an independent professional evaluating our situation.

The same man who wrote a report saying Emily showed “significant emotional distress” around me.

“He wasn’t supposed to know my personal life.””

Michael nodded.

“He knew because David gave him information.””

I stood.

“They all worked together.””

“Looks like it.””

I started walking.

Michael stopped me.

“Mark.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Don’t confront them yet.””

“Why?””

“Because right now, we know they coordinated. But we don’t know the entire plan.””

I hated waiting.

But he was right.

We needed proof.

Not anger.

Not accusations.

Proof.

That evening, I received a call from an unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice responded.

“Mark Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Daniel Reeves.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“I know who you are.””

There was a pause.

Then he laughed softly.

“I figured you would.””

“What do you want?””

“I think we should talk.””

“Why?””

“Because things are getting messy.””

I looked toward Emily’s room.

She was doing homework.

Safe.

For now.

“You mean your plan is falling apart?””

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My daughter had to record her own mother because nobody believed her.””

“That’s exactly why you should listen.””

My anger rose.

“Listen to what?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“To the truth about why Sarah wanted custody.””

I froze.

Because that was the one question nobody had answered.

The money.

The house.

The lies.

They were pieces.

But why start all of this?

“What truth?””

Daniel paused.

Then he said:

“Your divorce wasn’t the reason Sarah tried to take Emily.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then what was?””

His answer came slowly.

“She was trying to protect herself from something you were going to discover.””

My heart started racing.

“What something?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he said:

“Ask your brother why he really came back into your life three years ago.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Three years ago.

That was when David suddenly became close again.

When he started helping me.

When he started showing up.

When he started becoming part of my daughter’s life.

I looked toward Emily’s bedroom.

Then at the dark phone screen.

And I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Maybe David didn’t betray me recently.

Maybe he had been preparing for this from the beginning.
