Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Video

The name Emily whispered stayed in my mind as we walked out of the courtroom.

I had heard it before.

But never connected it to this.

“Daddy?””

I looked down at her.

She was holding my hand tightly, like she was afraid I might disappear if she loosened her grip.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She glanced toward the hallway where Sarah was speaking with her attorney.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Can we not tell Mommy I found it?””

My stomach tightened.

“Found what?””

“The video.””

I crouched down so we were eye level.

“Emily, you don’t have to protect adults from the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But I know Mommy will be angry.””

That sentence hurt more than anything Sarah had done.

Because my daughter had learned to measure every word before speaking.

She had learned that honesty came with consequences.

The court officer approached gently.

“Emily, we need to wait in the family room for a few minutes.””

She nodded.

Before she walked away, she squeezed my hand one last time.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at her.

“For what?””

She looked down.

“For making everyone fight.””

My chest tightened.

“Emily, you didn’t make anyone fight. You told the truth.””

She disappeared behind the door.

And I stood there wondering how many times she had apologized for things she never caused.

My attorney, Michael, walked toward me.

“You heard her.””

I nodded.

“The video.””

He lowered his voice.

“Do you have any idea who she meant?””

I looked back at the courtroom doors.

“No.””

Michael opened his folder.

“Before we make assumptions, we need to see exactly what’s on that phone.””

Twenty minutes later, we were back inside.

The judge had returned.

Sarah looked different now.

Less confident.

More desperate.

Her lawyer was whispering quickly into her ear.

The court officer placed the phone on the table.

“Your Honor, there is another video file.””

The judge nodded.

“Play it.””

The screen turned on.

At first, it was dark.

The camera angle was strange.

It looked like the phone had been hidden somewhere.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

Sarah.

But she wasn’t talking to Emily.

She wasn’t talking to me.

She was talking to someone else.

“I can’t keep doing this forever.””

A man answered.

“I told you, Sarah. You just need to stay consistent.””

The courtroom became silent.

My eyebrows pulled together.

I didn’t recognize the man’s voice.

Sarah continued.

“Mark is making things difficult.””

My heart stopped.

Mark.

My name.

The man replied:

“Then make him look unstable. You already started.””

Sarah sighed.

“I know. But Emily is getting older. She’s asking questions.””

The judge leaned closer.

“Continue.””

The video shook slightly.

Then the man spoke again.

“Once custody changes, everything gets easier.””

Sarah’s voice became quieter.

“And what about the house?””

The man laughed.

“That’s the point, isn’t it?””

My hands curled into fists.

The house.

That was what this was about?

The judge looked toward Sarah.

“Who is the person in this recording?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

Her attorney looked stunned.

The video continued.

Sarah whispered:

“I just need Emily to choose me.””

The man replied:

“She won’t if she sees him as the better parent.””

Then came the sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Sarah, you know what happens if Mark keeps the house. You lose everything.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

The judge looked at Sarah.

“Mrs. Carter.””

Sarah remained silent.

“Who was that man?””

Her face was pale.

Finally, she spoke.

“Someone I know.””

Michael stood.

“Someone who was helping you manipulate a custody case?””

Sarah looked at him angrily.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Michael replied.

“I understand perfectly.””

Sarah looked at the judge.

“Your Honor, this is being taken out of context.””

The judge’s expression hardened.

“A private conversation where you discuss making the father appear unstable to gain custody is not a misunderstanding.””

Sarah looked at me.

And for the first time since the divorce, I saw fear in her eyes.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Fear.

The judge ordered the recording to be preserved as evidence.

Then she looked at Emily’s file.

“Before we continue, I want to speak with the child privately.””

Sarah immediately stood.

“No.””

The judge looked up.

“No?””

Sarah froze.

“I mean… I think this is too much pressure for her.””

The judge stared at her.

“Mrs. Carter, your daughter has already demonstrated more courage today than many adults do in a lifetime.””

Sarah sat down.

The courtroom officer brought Emily back.

She walked slowly toward the judge.

Before sitting, she looked at me.

I smiled.

A small one.

The kind that said, I’m here.

The judge softened her voice.

“Emily, I want to ask you something.””

Emily nodded.

“Okay.””

“Why did you keep this video?””

Emily looked at the floor.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she answered:

“Because I heard Mommy talking about what she was going to do after I chose Daddy.””

The judge frowned.

“What was she going to do?””

Emily looked terrified.

“She said if Daddy won…”

She stopped.

Her hands started shaking.

The judge waited patiently.

Then Emily whispered:

“She said she would make sure I never saw him again.””
