Chapter 12: The Family Secret Nobody Wanted Revealed
I watched the video until my phone screen went dark.
My mother.
Standing inside my house.
Talking to Linda.
I wanted to believe it was impossible.
But the footage didn’t care what I wanted.
The next morning, I drove to my mother’s house.
I didn’t tell Michael.
I didn’t tell anyone.
I needed to hear it from her.
She opened the door and smiled.
“Mark.””
Then she noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I walked inside.
“We need to talk.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Is Emily okay?””
“Yes.””
“Then what is this about?””
I placed my phone on the table.
I played the video.
My mother watched.
She didn’t look shocked.
That hurt more than anything.
“You knew.””
She looked away.
“Mark.””
“You knew.””
She sat down slowly.
“I was trying to help.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“Help who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By working with Sarah?””
She looked down.
That was the answer.
I felt something break inside me.
“How long?””
She whispered:
“Before the divorce.””
I stepped back.
“Before?””
She nodded.
“Sarah came to me.””
My voice was quiet.
“What did she want?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“She said you were becoming impossible to live with.””
I almost laughed.
After everything.
The same story.
The same accusation.
“She told me you were controlling,” my mother continued.
“She said she was afraid.””
“And you believed her?””
“I was your mother.””
That answer confused me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
I stared.
“You helped her take my daughter because you were afraid of losing me?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I thought I was stopping you from making a mistake.””
I felt numb.
“My mistake?””
She cried quietly.
“Your father knew.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Your father knew Sarah was manipulating everyone.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked away.
“Because he asked me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed you would destroy yourself trying to fight everyone.””
I thought about the letter.
Protect Emily.
The person who knows where you keep the key.
My mother continued.
“Your father wanted proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“That Sarah and David were connected.””
I stared.
“You knew about David?””
She nodded.
“He came to me before he came to you.””
My hands went cold.
“What did he say?””
My mother’s voice shook.
“He said your father was hiding something.””
“What?””
“He said the trust was not the only thing your father left behind.””
I stepped closer.
“What else?””
My mother looked terrified.
“Your father left evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
She whispered:
“The truth about Sarah’s first marriage.””
I frowned.
“What does her first marriage have to do with this?””
My mother looked at me.
“Everything.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What happened?””
She reached into a drawer and pulled out an old envelope.
“I kept this because I was afraid.””
I took it.
The name on the front made my heart stop.
Sarah Carter.
But the date was from before I ever met her.
I looked at my mother.
“What is this?””
She whispered:
“The secret Sarah has spent years hiding.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one photograph.
And one document.
The photograph showed Sarah.
A man I didn’t recognize.
And a little girl.
A little girl who looked strangely familiar.
Then I read the name on the document.
My hands started shaking.
Because the child in the photograph wasn’t a stranger.
She was someone I had met before.
Someone Sarah had introduced as just a friend.
The document revealed the truth.
And suddenly I understood why Sarah was desperate to control Emily’s custody.
Because if this secret came out…
