Chapter 10: The Will That Changed Everything
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because of Sarah.
Not because of David.
Because of my father.
For years, I had believed I understood my family.
I believed my father changed his will because he wanted to protect Emily.
I believed David came back into my life because he missed his brother.
I believed Sarah’s betrayal began after our marriage fell apart.
Now I questioned everything.
At 6:13 in the morning, my phone rang.
It was Michael.
“I found something.””
I sat up immediately.
“What?””
“Your father’s attorney.””
I frowned.
“My father’s attorney died years ago.””
“His firm still has archived documents.””
I got dressed before he even finished speaking.
An hour later, I was sitting across from an attorney named Richard Hale.
He was older, with gray hair and a tired expression.
When he saw my name, his face changed.
“You’re Mark Carter.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at Michael.
“Does he know?””
The question bothered me.
“Know what?””
Richard slowly opened a file.
“I was instructed not to discuss this unless you came looking for answers yourself.””
My stomach tightened.
“Answers about what?””
He removed a document.
“Your father discovered someone was attempting to manipulate his estate.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Richard looked directly at me.
“Your brother.””
The room became silent.
I felt the same pain all over again.
No matter how many times I heard it, it still felt impossible.
“My father knew?””
Richard nodded.
“He suspected David was using family information for personal gain.””
Michael leaned forward.
“When did he discover this?””
“About three months before his death.””
I closed my eyes.
Three months.
That was exactly when everything changed.
My father suddenly became distant with David.
At the time, I thought they had argued.
I never asked why.
I was busy with work.
Busy with my marriage.
Busy thinking there would always be more time.
Richard continued.
“Your father came to me because he was worried about your daughter.””
“Emily?””
“Yes.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
Richard looked at the document.
“He believed certain people were trying to gain control of the trust created for her.””
“Certain people?””
He paused.
“Sarah’s family.””
I felt sick.
“How long had they known about it?””
“Your father believed they found out shortly after your marriage.””
I looked at Michael.
The same question was on his face.
“If my father knew this, why didn’t he tell me?””
Richard’s expression softened.
“Because he thought telling you would make things worse.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“He believed you would confront them.””
I said nothing.
Because he was right.
My father knew me.
He knew I would have fought.
And maybe that was exactly what he wanted to prevent.
Richard handed me another paper.
“This is the letter your father left.””
My hands shook slightly.
“A letter?””
“He requested that it only be given to you if evidence appeared that someone was attempting to interfere with Emily’s future.””
I unfolded it.
My father’s handwriting stared back at me.
*Mark,*
*If you are reading this, then my fears were not imaginary.*
I stopped.
The room blurred.
*I hope I am wrong. I hope the people around you are better than I believe.*
*But if I am right, remember this: money does not reveal someone’s character. It reveals what they were willing to hide before they had it.*
I swallowed.
Then I continued.
*Protect Emily. Not just from people who hate her, but from people who claim to love her while using her.*
My hands tightened around the paper.
There was one final paragraph.
*The greatest danger to a family is not the enemy outside the door. It is the person who knows where you keep the key.*
I looked up.
David.
The key.
The person who knew everything.
Michael broke the silence.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He placed his phone on the table.
“We found a recent transfer.””
I stared at the screen.
A payment from Sarah.
To David.
But this time, there was a description.
My blood ran cold.
*Phase Two Consultation.*
“What is phase two?””
Nobody answered.
Because we already knew.
This was bigger than custody.
Bigger than the house.
Bigger than the divorce.
Richard closed the file.
“Mr. Carter, there is one more thing your father wanted you to know.””
“What?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“He believed David wasn’t acting alone.””
My heart sank.
“Who else?””
Richard hesitated.
May you like
Then he said:
“Someone inside your own home.””
