Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside My Own Family
I drove home that night without turning on the radio.
The silence was unbearable.
Every few minutes, I looked in the rearview mirror at Emily sleeping in the back seat.
She looked peaceful.
For the first time in months.
And I hated that it took a courtroom for her to feel safe.
But I couldn’t stop thinking about David.
My brother.
The person who had hugged me when Sarah filed for divorce.
The person who sat across from me at dinner and said, “I’ll help you get through this.””
The same person secretly telling my ex-wife how to take my daughter away.
When we arrived home, Emily woke up.
“Are we home?””
“Yeah.””
She smiled slightly.
“Our home?””
I froze.
That one word.
Our.
I nodded.
“Yes. Our home.””
She grabbed her backpack and walked inside.
I watched her put her things away.
Normal things.
A jacket.
A school notebook.
A stuffed rabbit.
Things that had nothing to do with courtrooms or lawyers or adult problems.
She was eight years old.
She should have been worrying about homework.
Not custody battles.
My phone rang.
Michael.
I answered.
“Tell me everything.””
He was quiet for a moment.
“We found financial records.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of records?””
“Payments.””
“To who?””
“David.””
I sat down.
“What?””
Michael continued.
“Sarah transferred money to your brother several times over the last six months.””
I stared at the wall.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if they were working together.””
I ran a hand over my face.
“But why?””
Michael hesitated.
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.””
I looked toward Emily’s room.
The door was slightly open.
She was drawing.
Probably pretending life was normal.
“Michael.””
“Yes?””
“Don’t tell me anything else until we know for sure.””
“Why?””
Because I wasn’t ready.
Because there was still a small part of me hoping my brother had an explanation.
A misunderstanding.
Anything.
But deep down, I already knew.
The next morning, I received a message.
From David.
*We need to talk. Alone.*
I stared at the screen.
Emily walked into the kitchen.
“Who is it?””
I quickly locked my phone.
“Nobody.””
She looked at me.
The old Emily would have accepted that answer.
The new Emily didn’t.
“Daddy.””
I looked up.
“Yeah?””
“You don’t have to protect me from the truth.””
The words hit me.
Because they were my words.
The same words I had told her.
But now she was saying them back.
I smiled sadly.
“You’re right.””
She sat beside me.
“Is it Uncle David?””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
Emily looked down.
“Because Mommy talked about him.””
My heart started racing.
“What did she say?””
Emily became nervous.
“He was the person who told her what to do.””
I stood up.
“What else?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t remember.””
I knelt beside her.
“Emily, this is important.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“I don’t want to be in trouble.””
“You won’t.””
“But Mommy said…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“What did Mommy say?””
Emily whispered:
“She said Uncle David knew a way to make sure Daddy disappeared from my life forever.””
The room went cold.
I stood there, staring at my daughter.
My own brother.
My own family.
My own blood.
And suddenly the custody battle wasn’t just about losing my daughter.
It was about discovering who had been trying to destroy me from the inside.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
From David.
This time, only four words.
*You know the truth.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*But you don’t know why.*
