Chapter 9: The Truth That Waited Five Years

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The words hung in the air.

*The person standing next to you.*

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

His eyes moved from Michael to me.

Then back again.

“I didn’t do this.””

I said nothing.

That was the worst thing I could have done.

Silence creates space for doubt.

And doubt was exactly what someone wanted.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Ethan.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

His face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“You think it’s me?””

“I think someone wants me to think it’s you.””

That answer surprised him.

But it was the truth.

I had learned something about betrayal.

The obvious answer was usually the one someone wanted you to see.

Michael looked at me.

“So what now?””

I looked at the documents from Sarah’s office.

“The truth.””

We moved to the conference room.

Every document Sarah saved was placed across the table.

Daniel reviewed the records carefully.

Then he stopped.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

“What?””

He pointed.

“The transfers happened after Sarah died.””

I looked closer.

The dates were clear.

Money had continued leaving the company.

But Sarah couldn’t have known about those.

“She found the beginning,” Daniel said.

“And someone continued it.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Meaning?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Meaning Victor wasn’t the only person involved.””

I thought about Sarah’s letter.

The problem was who people became when they thought they deserved more.

She wasn’t warning me about one person.

She was warning me about a system.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

A location.

No name.

Only coordinates.

Daniel looked at it.

“Don’t go.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because it’s exactly what they want.””

I smiled slightly.

“Sarah would say the same thing.””

“And you would ignore her.””

“Yes.””

For the first time all night, Daniel almost smiled.

“She hated that about you.””

“She loved that about me.””

The smile disappeared.

Because we both remembered.

Sarah.

The person who connected all of us.

The person who was no longer here to guide us.

We followed the location.

An abandoned storage building near the edge of the city.

The place looked empty.

Too empty.

Michael whispered:

“This is a trap.””

“I know.””

“Then why are we here?””

I looked at him.

“Because Sarah came here.””

Inside, we found boxes.

Hundreds of files.

Old company records.

Photos.

Notes.

And one video recorder.

I pressed play.

The screen flickered.

Sarah appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But still Sarah.

My breath caught.

“Ethan,” she said.

I had heard recordings of her voice before.

But this was different.

This was meant for me.

“If you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””

I sat down.

Daniel and Michael stayed silent.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“I wanted to tell you everything.””

She took a breath.

“Victor betrayed us.””

I closed my eyes.

But she continued.

“He wasn’t alone.””

The room became colder.

“I found the person helping him.””

Sarah looked away.

For a moment, she looked scared.

Not worried.

Scared.

“The person who helped Victor had access to everything.””

She looked back.

“The company.””

“The accounts.””

“My medical information.””

My hands tightened.

“Ethan, if something happens to me, do not believe anyone who says they are protecting you.””

A tear slipped down my face.

Because I knew Sarah.

She didn’t record this because she was afraid to die.

She recorded it because she was afraid of what would happen after.

The video continued.

“I need you to understand one thing.””

Sarah’s voice became softer.

“Your enemy is not someone outside the family.””

I looked at Michael.

Then Daniel.

Then the screen.

Sarah whispered:

“Your enemy is someone who knows exactly how much you love us.””

The video ended.

The room stayed silent.

Then the storage door opened behind us.

A voice spoke.

“Sarah always underestimated one thing.””

We turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

Not Victor.

Not Emily.

Someone else.

Someone I never suspected.

Someone who had been helping me search for the truth.

The person stepped into the light.

And said:

“I knew Ethan would come here eventually.””

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the voice.

It belonged to someone Sarah loved.

Someone we all trusted.

Someone who had been protecting Lily all night.

The person looked at me.

And whispered:

“I’m sorry, Ethan.””

A pause.

Then:

May you like

“But Sarah was wrong.””

“You were never supposed to find this.””
