Chapter 10: The Guardian Who Lied
The person standing in the doorway was the last person I expected.
My mind rejected what my eyes were seeing.
It couldn’t be him.
Not after everything.
Not after the long nights.
Not after the promises.
Not after he had stood beside Lily like she was his own family.
“Daniel?””
The name left my mouth quietly.
Daniel Cross looked down.
And that was when I knew.
Not because he looked guilty.
Not because he looked afraid.
Because he looked tired.
Like a man who had been carrying a secret for too long.
Michael stepped forward.
“No.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Michael.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice cracked.
“You?””
The room felt smaller.
I looked between them.
“Explain.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“I can explain.””
“Then do it.””
His eyes met mine.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
“That is not an explanation.””
Daniel looked at the video recorder on the table.
“Sarah asked me to protect you.””
My chest tightened.
“Protect me?””
“Yes.””
“By lying to me?””
He had no answer.
I stepped closer.
“You let me believe Victor was the only person responsible.””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“Then what did you know?””
Daniel looked away.
And that was the first time I saw something I never expected from him.
Shame.
“Sarah came to me two weeks before she died.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“Why?””
“She knew something was wrong.””
Daniel walked slowly into the room.
“She didn’t trust anyone at the company anymore.””
Michael shook his head.
“She trusted you.””
Daniel looked at him.
“That’s why she came to me.””
The silence was unbearable.
I remembered Sarah’s letter.
Do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you.
The words felt like they were written for this exact moment.
“What did she ask you to do?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She asked me to keep certain files hidden.””
“What files?””
“The ones that could destroy the company.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Destroy the company?””
I pointed around us.
“People were stealing from us.””
“I know.””
“Someone was manipulating her medical records.””
“I know.””
“And you hid evidence?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Because Sarah asked me to.””
I stared at him.
For five years, I had respected Daniel.
Trusted him.
Believed he was one of the few people who still carried Sarah’s values.
Now I didn’t know what was real.
“You should have told me.””
“I wanted to.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Daniel looked at Lily’s photograph hidden inside the folder.
“Because Sarah told me what would happen.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
“She said if you knew the truth too early, you would go after everyone involved.””
“That’s what I should have done.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became firm.
“That’s exactly what they wanted.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
“Ethan, this wasn’t just a financial crime.””
The room became quiet.
“It was a setup.””
Michael frowned.
“For what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“To make you look unstable.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
“They wanted you to react emotionally. They wanted you to destroy relationships, accuse people, make mistakes.””
I remembered Victor’s words.
You would burn the whole world down to protect the people you love.
Sarah knew me.
She knew exactly how I would respond.
Daniel continued.
“Victor needed you angry.””
“Why?””
“Because angry people are easy to control.””
A noise came from outside.
Footsteps.
Everyone turned.
Daniel immediately moved in front of Lily’s photograph.
Protective.
Instinctive.
The door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Emily Carter.
She looked exhausted.
Her clothes were dirty.
There was fear in her eyes.
Michael stood.
“Emily.””
She looked at Daniel.
“You told him?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Emily looked at me.
“I did.””
I stepped forward.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Emily looked at the video recorder.
“Sarah discovered something worse than theft.””
“What?””
Emily took a deep breath.
“She discovered someone had been changing her medical records.””
Nobody spoke.
My hands went cold.
“Why?””
Emily looked at Lily’s picture.
“Because someone wanted Sarah to believe she was getting worse faster than she actually was.””
The room stopped.
I couldn’t understand.
“What are you saying?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m saying Sarah’s illness was real.””
A pause.
“But the timeline was manipulated.””
Michael whispered:
“No…”
Emily nodded.
“Someone wanted her weak.””
My heart felt like it was breaking all over again.
Because Sarah had spent her final months believing she was running out of time.
Believing there was no chance.
Believing she had to prepare everyone for life without her.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who did it?””
Nobody answered.
Then Emily reached into her bag.
She pulled out a folder.
“This is what Sarah found.””
I opened it.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And one final document.
A hospital authorization form.
My eyes stopped on the signature.
Because I recognized it.
The person who approved access to Sarah’s medical records was someone I had invited into my home.
Someone who held Lily when she was a baby.
Someone who cried at Sarah’s funeral.
Someone whose betrayal I never imagined.
Emily whispered:
“Ethan…”
I looked up.
“Who?””
She said the name.
May you like
And the world went silent.
“Your own father.””
