Chapter 7: The Room Sarah Locked Away

The old Grand Regent looked nothing like the hotel standing behind me now.

The luxury chain had grown into something enormous.

Glass towers.

Private elevators.

Five-star restaurants.

Thousands of employees.

But the first building was different.

It sat quietly on the edge of the city, hidden between older apartments and forgotten streets.

It was where Sarah and I started.

Where we painted walls ourselves.

Where we slept on a mattress in the unfinished manager’s office because we couldn’t afford an apartment.

Where she looked at a broken lobby and somehow saw a future.

The rain had stopped by the time Daniel parked the car.

Lily was asleep in the back seat.

The stuffed rabbit was tucked beneath her chin.

I stared at the building through the windshield.

“Are you sure about this?”” Daniel asked.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

I continued.

“But I’m sure I need answers.””

Michael sat quietly in the passenger seat.

For the entire drive, he barely spoke.

Finally, he turned around.

“Ethan.””

I looked at him.

“I need to tell you something before we go inside.””

I waited.

“My father wasn’t the only person Sarah suspected.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“Who else?””

Michael looked away.

“Me.””

The silence was immediate.

Daniel glanced at him.

“What?””

Michael nodded.

“Sarah questioned me too.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew things about my father.””

I stared at him.

“And you didn’t tell her?””

“I tried.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice became colder.

“Sarah was dying, Michael. She was fighting for her life. And you were afraid?””

His face fell.

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

I looked toward the building.

“She trusted you.””

Michael whispered:

“I know.””

The answer didn’t fix anything.

But for the first time, I believed he understood the damage.

We entered through the side entrance.

The building smelled exactly the same.

Old wood.

Dust.

A faint trace of the lemon cleaner Sarah always loved.

My footsteps echoed through the empty hallway.

Lily woke up.

“Daddy?””

“I’m here.””

“Is Mommy here?””

I looked around.

For a second, I almost believed she was.

“No, sweetheart.””

I smiled gently.

“But she left something for us.””

We reached the fourth floor.

Room 417.

The hallway lights flickered.

Daniel tried the old master key.

Nothing.

The lock was different.

Michael stepped forward.

“Sarah changed it.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Not this. But she told me once that some doors should only open for the right person.””

I held the small metal key.

My hand shook as I inserted it.

Click.

The door opened.

Nobody spoke.

The room was small.

An old office.

Sarah’s office.

The furniture was covered with white sheets.

A bookshelf stood against the wall.

And on the desk was a picture.

A picture of us.

The day we opened the first hotel.

Sarah was laughing.

I was holding a champagne bottle I couldn’t afford.

I walked closer.

Beside the picture was a note.

My name.

I picked it up.

Ethan,

If you are here, then you finally came looking.

I swallowed.

Michael looked away.

I continued reading.

I wanted to tell you everything. I wanted to trust that we could face it together.

But I knew you.

You would burn the whole world down to protect the people you love.

A painful smile crossed my face.

That was Sarah.

Even after death, she still knew me.

I kept reading.

The problem was never the money.

The problem was who people became when they thought they deserved more.

I looked around the room.

Daniel noticed something.

“Mr. Vance.””

I turned.

He was standing beside the bookshelf.

“There’s something here.””

He pulled out a folder hidden behind the books.

Inside were documents.

Financial reports.

Bank records.

Emails.

Sarah had been collecting evidence.

I opened the first page.

A company name appeared.

*Hale Strategic Holdings.*

My stomach dropped.

Victor’s company.

But then Daniel pointed to another name.

“Wait.””

I looked closer.

A second signature appeared.

Someone else had approved the transfers.

Someone else had helped move the money.

I recognized the name.

And my blood went cold.

Because it wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Michael.

It was someone who had been beside me for years.

Someone Sarah had trusted.

Someone I had trusted.

The office door suddenly slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

A shadow moved outside.

Daniel rushed toward it.

“Hey!””

The footsteps disappeared down the hallway.

I grabbed the documents.

Michael looked terrified.

“They knew we would come here.””

I looked at the evidence in my hand.

“No.””

I walked toward the door.

“They didn’t know.””

I opened it.

“They were waiting.””

And on the floor outside was a single envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

A photograph of Lily.

Taken earlier that night.

On the back, someone had written:

*I WARNED SARAH TOO.*
