Chapter 2: The Lobby That Forgot Sarah

The lobby became completely silent.

Not the peaceful silence of a luxury hotel.

The uncomfortable silence of people realizing they had made a mistake.

The general manager, Daniel Cross, stood frozen beside the private elevator.

I had known Daniel for eight years.

He was one of the executives Sarah personally hired.

Back then, he was a young hotel manager with a notebook full of ideas and a habit of staying late to help employees finish their work.

Sarah saw something in him.

“He cares about people,” she told me.

That was why she promoted him.

Now he looked at me like he had seen a ghost.

“Mr. Vance,” Daniel repeated.

I nodded.

“Daniel.””

Amanda immediately stepped forward.

“Mr. Cross, I can explain.””

I raised a hand.

“Can you?””

She stopped.

Daniel looked between us.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

That told me everything.

Finally, Lupita quietly spoke.

“Mr. Vance came in with his daughter. They said his reservation wasn’t found.””

Daniel looked at Amanda.

“And?””

Amanda swallowed.

“I checked the system.””

“And?””

Brooke stepped in.

“There was no room available.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“That wasn’t the question.””

The room became colder.

I watched Amanda’s confidence disappear.

“He seemed confused,” she said.

“Confused?”” Daniel repeated.

“Yes. He said he had a corporate reservation.””

Daniel turned toward me.

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

He immediately grabbed his tablet.

“Name?””

I almost smiled.

“Ethan Vance.””

His fingers stopped moving.

Because he knew.

Everyone in that hotel knew the name.

But they didn’t know the man.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“He was assigned the presidential suite.””

Amanda’s face went white.

Brooke whispered, “What?””

Daniel looked up.

“Your reservation was confirmed three months ago.””

I looked at Amanda.

“Three months?””

She avoided my eyes.

Daniel continued scrolling.

“And there are notes attached.””

“What notes?”” I asked.

He hesitated.

Then he read.

“Guest requested privacy. Arrival without security. No public announcement.””

I nodded.

“Exactly.””

Sarah and I used to do that.

Visit our hotels quietly.

Not to catch employees.

To understand them.

To know what guests experienced when nobody important was watching.

Daniel slowly lowered the tablet.

“You came here alone?””

I glanced at Lily.

“Not alone.””

His expression softened.

“I’m sorry, sir.””

I looked at the reception desk.

“Don’t apologize to me yet.””

Daniel followed my gaze.

I pointed toward Lupita.

“Apologize to her.””

The older woman looked surprised.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

“Lupita, I’m sorry you were spoken to that way.””

Her eyes became glossy.

“I was only trying to help.””

“I know.””

I studied Daniel carefully.

“Do you?””

He looked down.

And for a moment, I saw the young manager Sarah believed in.

Not the executive who had forgotten why the company existed.

Daniel approached Lily.

“Is she okay?””

“She’s tired.””

He nodded.

“I’ll have the suite prepared immediately.””

“No.””

He stopped.

I picked up the roses.

“I want to know something first.””

Daniel waited.

“Do employees here still know Sarah’s story?””

The question surprised him.

“Of course.””

“Do they?””

I looked around the lobby.

The expensive furniture.

The gold decorations.

The perfect lighting.

Everything looked beautiful.

But something felt empty.

“Because Sarah would have never allowed someone to stand here with a child and be treated like this.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You’re right.””

A voice came from behind him.

“Mr. Cross?””

Everyone turned.

A young employee in a suit stood near the entrance.

He looked nervous.

“Sorry to interrupt, but there’s something you need to see.””

Daniel frowned.

“What is it?””

The employee glanced at Amanda and Brooke.

Then at me.

“It’s about the reservation system.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What about it?””

The employee lowered his voice.

“The reservation didn’t disappear.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at the reception computers.

“It was manually removed.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel turned slowly toward the desk.

“Who removed it?””

The employee hesitated.

Then he looked directly at Amanda.

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Amanda.””

She said nothing.

“Amanda, answer me.””

Her hands started shaking.

“I…”

I walked closer.

The roses were still crushed in my hand.

“Who told you to remove my reservation?””

Amanda looked at me.

And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.

“It wasn’t my idea.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Whose idea was it?””

Amanda opened her mouth.

Then the lobby doors suddenly opened.

A man in a dark suit walked in.

He moved quickly.

Like he already knew what was happening.

Like he had been expecting this moment.

He stopped when he saw me.

And whispered one sentence.

“Ethan Vance.””

I stared at him.

Because I knew that voice.

I had not heard it in years.

Daniel looked between us.

“Mr. Vance…”

The man lowered his eyes.

May you like

And said the name I never expected to hear again.

“Your wife’s brother is the reason your reservation was deleted.””
