Chapter 11: The Family Secret

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

My father.

The man who taught me how to shake hands.

The man who told me honesty was the foundation of any business.

The man who stood beside me at Sarah’s funeral.

Impossible.

I looked at Emily.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Not because I knew she was wrong.

Because I needed her to be.

Emily didn’t argue.

She simply looked at me with sadness.

“I wanted it to be wrong too.””

Michael stared at the document.

“Why would his father do this?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because he knew Ethan.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel pointed to the papers.

“Your father understood something Victor didn’t.””

“What?””

“He knew Sarah was the one person who could stop him.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“My father loved Sarah.””

Emily’s expression changed.

“That’s what makes this harder.””

She sat down.

“Your father didn’t hate Sarah.””

The sentence confused me.

“Then why?””

“Because people can love someone and still hurt them.””

Nobody spoke.

That was the cruelest truth.

I looked at the papers again.

The evidence was there.

But my memories fought against it.

My father teaching me to ride a bike.

My father holding newborn Lily.

My father telling Sarah she was the daughter he never had.

All those moments.

Were they fake?

Emily noticed my expression.

“Ethan, Sarah struggled with this too.””

I looked up.

“She knew?””

Emily nodded.

“She found out three days before she recorded that video.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Emily looked at Lily’s sleeping picture.

“Because she was afraid you would lose your father and your wife at the same time.””

The room became unbearably quiet.

Michael looked away.

Even he understood.

Sarah had carried impossible choices alone.

I picked up the document.

“Where is he now?””

Nobody answered.

That answer was enough.

“Where?””

Daniel spoke carefully.

“He left the country after Sarah’s death.””

I looked at him.

“And nobody thought that was suspicious?””

Daniel looked down.

“I did.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Sarah made me promise.””

The same sentence again.

Promises.

Secrets.

Protection.

Everyone had protected me so much that they had destroyed my ability to know the truth.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice came through.

“Ethan.””

I froze.

My father.

“Dad?””

Everyone looked at me.

His voice was older than I remembered.

Tired.

“I know you found the files.””

I couldn’t speak.

“How?””

A long silence.

“Because I’m the one who wanted you to.””

My grip tightened.

“What?””

“I knew Sarah left a trail.””

My anger returned.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I needed you to see it yourself.””

I laughed.

A cold, empty sound.

“You manipulated me.””

“No.””

“Dad.””

My voice broke.

“You let me believe you abandoned me after Sarah died.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

A pause.

Then my father said something that made my blood run cold.

“Ethan, Sarah wasn’t the only person in danger.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“She knew there was another person involved.””

“Victor?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

My father’s voice lowered.

“The person who arranged everything.””

I looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At Emily.

At Michael.

“Who?””

My father whispered:

“The person who benefited most from Sarah’s death.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who?””

The line went silent.

Then he said:

“Your daughter’s inheritance.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“Sarah changed her will before she died.””

I felt frozen.

“She left everything to Lily.””

Nobody moved.

My father continued.

“Someone tried to change that.””

I looked at Lily.

My daughter.

The child Sarah died trying to protect.

“Who?””

My father took a shaky breath.

“The person who would lose everything if Lily inherited the company.””

I heard a noise behind me.

I turned.

Emily was staring at the documents.

Her face had gone pale.

“What?””

She pointed.

At the signature.

At the final authorization.

And whispered:

“Ethan…”

Her voice shook.

“That name wasn’t supposed to be there.””

I stepped closer.

“What name?””

She looked at me.

“The person who changed the inheritance documents.””

I waited.

May you like

Emily whispered:

“It was signed by Sarah’s closest friend.””
