Chapter 12: The Friend Who Knew Everything
I knew the name before Emily said it.
Because there was only one person.
One person Sarah trusted beyond family.
One person who knew every detail of our lives.
Every fear.
Every dream.
Every weakness.
“Who?”” I asked anyway.
Emily looked at me.
“Rachel Morgan.””
The name hit harder than I expected.
Rachel.
Sarah’s best friend since college.
The woman who helped plan our wedding.
The woman who sat beside Sarah during chemotherapy.
The woman who held Lily the night Sarah died.
No.
Not Rachel.
I shook my head.
“No.””
Emily looked sympathetic.
“I know.””
“You’re wrong.””
“I wish I was.””
I grabbed the documents.
“Where is the proof?””
Emily pointed.
“Look at the signatures.””
I studied the page.
The inheritance change.
The legal documents.
The authorization.
My hands became cold.
Because Rachel’s signature was there.
But something was wrong.
The date.
The date was after Sarah’s death.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Exactly.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Someone forged her signature.””
The room went silent.
“So Rachel didn’t do it?””
Emily hesitated.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I looked at her.
“You just told me it was Rachel.””
“I said her name was on the document.””
“That’s different.””
“Yes.””
Emily looked down.
“Sarah knew someone was using Rachel.””
Michael frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Rachel was the easiest person to blame.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She was close to Sarah.””
“She had access.””
“She knew the family.””
I felt the pieces moving.
Someone wasn’t just stealing money.
Someone was building a perfect story.
A story where everyone could be blamed.
Victor.
Michael.
Daniel.
Rachel.
Even my own father.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone looked guilty.
And while we were fighting each other, someone else was moving behind the scenes.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
A photo.
Rachel.
She was standing outside a hospital.
The caption read:
*SHE KNOWS WHERE SARAH’S LAST FILE IS.*
I looked up.
“We need to find Rachel.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll arrange transport.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
I folded the message.
“We do this differently.””
Michael frowned.
“How?””
“We stop reacting.””
I looked around.
“Someone has been leading us from one place to another all night.””
Daniel understood immediately.
“They want us chasing answers.””
“Yes.””
“And while we chase…”
“They remove evidence.””
Emily looked at me.
“So what do we do?””
I stared at Sarah’s final video.
The woman I loved had spent her last days preparing for this moment.
She knew I would come.
She knew I would search.
She knew I would struggle.
But she also knew one thing.
I never gave up.
“We make them think we’re still lost.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“You want to set a trap?””
I nodded.
“A trap Sarah would have made.””
Michael looked at the documents.
“What’s the bait?””
I picked up the inheritance papers.
“The thing they fear most.””
“What?””
I looked at Lily sleeping peacefully.
“The truth.””
Later that night, a company-wide announcement was prepared.
A statement saying I had found nothing.
A statement saying the evidence was inconclusive.
A statement saying I believed Victor acted alone.
A lie.
The biggest lie I had ever told.
And within twenty minutes, someone reacted.
Daniel showed me the alert.
“Someone accessed the hidden files.””
“Who?””
He turned the screen.
A location appeared.
Not a hotel.
Not an office.
A private residence.
My old family home.
The place where I grew up.
The place my father raised me.
The place Sarah and I visited every Sunday.
My heart sank.
Because someone was there.
Someone searching through the memories of my life.
I grabbed my coat.
Daniel stood.
“Ethan.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“If we go there…”
I waited.
Daniel’s face turned serious.
“We might finally find out who Sarah was protecting you from.””
I opened the door.
Outside, the rain had started again.
And for the first time in five years…
I was going back to my father’s house.
May you like
Not as a son.
As a man searching for the truth.
