Chapter 9: The Marriage That Was Planned
The room became silent.
Not the uncomfortable silence from earlier.
Something worse.
The silence of people realizing their entire reality might be wrong.
Daniel stared at my father.
“What are you saying?””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
I watched his face.
The man who had always protected me.
The man who taught me honesty.
Was now standing in front of me carrying a secret.
“Dad.””
My voice broke.
“Tell me.””
He looked at me.
“I wanted to.””
“But you didn’t.””
He nodded.
And somehow that hurt more.
My father sat down.
“Before you met Daniel, Richard had already started looking for a way into my life.””
I listened carefully.
“Then you met Daniel.””
I frowned.
“What does Daniel have to do with Richard?””
My father looked at him.
“His family had business connections with Richard.””
Daniel went pale.
“My family?””
Linda looked away.
“You knew.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She sighed.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“You knew about Richard before we got married?””
“I knew his name.””
“And you said nothing?””
Linda looked ashamed.
“I thought I could keep it away from you.””
I closed my eyes.
Everyone had been protecting secrets.
And somehow, I was the last person to know.
My father continued.
“When you told me you were dating Daniel, I was afraid.””
“Afraid of him?””
“No.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Afraid of what was behind him.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“So you approved our marriage anyway?””
My father was silent.
That silence answered everything.
“Dad…”
“I investigated.””
My heart sank.
“You investigated Daniel?””
“I had to.””
Daniel looked offended.
“And what did you find?””
My father looked at him.
“Nothing.””
That surprised everyone.
“You were clean.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Clean?””
“Yes.””
My father looked at me.
“And that was when I realized something.””
“What?””
“Richard didn’t choose Daniel.””
A pause.
“He chose you.””
I felt cold.
“Why?””
My father looked at the photograph again.
“Because of your mother.””
I stared.
“My mother?””
“She left something behind.””
“What?””
My father reached into a folder he had brought with him.
Inside was a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
My name was written on it.
My hands shook.
“That’s from Mom?””
He nodded.
“She wanted you to have it when you were ready.””
I looked at the envelope.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because I was afraid opening it would put you in danger.””
I almost laughed.
“Dad, my dress was ripped open tonight because of your secrets.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Sarah, if you are reading this, then Richard found a way back into our lives.*
I covered my mouth.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Read it.””
I continued.
*I need you to know one thing. Your father did everything he could to protect us. But there was someone else who knew the truth. Someone close to us.*
My hands trembled.
I looked up.
“Someone close?””
My father nodded.
I kept reading.
*Do not trust the person who says they are protecting you. Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who hide the biggest dangers.*
The room felt colder.
Daniel looked at Linda.
Linda looked at my father.
Everyone was thinking the same thing.
The letter continued.
*The night before your wedding, someone tried to stop you from marrying Daniel. They knew the marriage would connect two families Richard could not control.*
I stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked confused.
My father looked devastated.
I read the next sentence.
*Sarah, your marriage was the one thing Richard could not predict.*
My heart pounded.
The wedding.
The timing.
Everything.
It wasn’t random.
Someone had tried to stop it.
I looked at Daniel.
“What did your family know?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Then his phone rang.
Again.
Unknown number.
Nobody wanted him to answer.
But he did.
A voice came through.
Not Richard.
A woman’s voice.
“Daniel?””
His face changed.
Because he recognized it.
“Emily?””
The voice sounded frightened.
“Listen to me. I made a mistake.””
Daniel stood frozen.
“What did you do?””
A pause.
Then Emily whispered:
“I didn’t access Sarah’s medical records.””
Everyone looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Her voice shook.
“Someone used my computer.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
Silence.
Then she said:
“The same person who has been controlling your mother for years.””
My father grabbed the phone.
“Who?””
Emily hesitated.
Then whispered:
“It’s someone Sarah trusts.””
My heart stopped.
The line went quiet.
Then Emily said the name.
May you like
And the entire room changed.
Because it was the one person I never thought could betray me.
