Chapter 10: The Name I Never Expected

The phone slipped from Daniel’s hand.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because we all knew.

The name Emily had said was still hanging between us.

The name of the person I had spent my entire life trusting.

The person who had held my hand through every difficult moment.

The person I never imagined standing on the other side.

My father.

“Who was it?”” Daniel asked.

His voice was low.

Dangerously calm.

I looked at him.

Then at my father.

He already knew.

I could see it in his face.

“Dad.””

My voice barely came out.

“Who did she say?””

My father didn’t answer.

That was when my heart truly broke.

Because silence was becoming his answer.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

And whispered:

“Your aunt.””

I felt the room tilt.

“My aunt?””

My father nodded.

“Your mother’s sister.””

I stared at him.

A woman who had been at every birthday.

Every holiday.

Every family gathering.

A woman who called me her little girl.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

“She wouldn’t.””

My father looked at me sadly.

“I wanted to believe that too.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is your aunt?””

“My mother’s sister,” I said.

My voice sounded distant.

“Clara.””

Linda suddenly sat down.

“She was always jealous.””

Everyone looked at her.

I hated that she sounded like she understood.

“You knew?””

Linda shook her head.

“Not everything.””

My father looked at her.

“You knew enough.””

Linda looked away.

“I knew Clara hated Sarah’s mother.””

“Why?””

Linda hesitated.

“Because your mother had something Clara wanted.””

I stared.

“What?””

My father answered.

“Proof.””

The word meant nothing and everything.

“Proof of what?””

My father walked toward the table and placed another file down.

“I found this years ago.””

I opened it.

Inside were copies of documents.

Business records.

Payments.

Names.

And there it was.

Clara Whitmore.

Not my aunt’s married name.

Not the name I knew.

A different name.

Connected to Richard Vale.

My stomach twisted.

“She worked with him?””

My father nodded.

“Your aunt helped Richard hide money.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“And Linda knew?””

Linda looked angry.

“I knew Clara was dangerous. I didn’t know she was still working with him.””

My father stared at her.

“You protected her.””

“I was protecting my family.””

“No,” he said.

“You were protecting your image.””

Linda looked down.

For once, she had no response.

I held the documents tighter.

“But why me?””

My father’s expression softened.

“Because your mother discovered what they were doing.””

I looked at the papers.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“And she hid the evidence?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

My father hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“She hid it somewhere only you could access.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“Your mother knew if she told me everything, Richard would come after both of us.””

My hands trembled.

“So she left something for me?””

He nodded.

“But she never got the chance to tell you.””

A memory suddenly appeared.

Something I had forgotten.

A small wooden box.

My mother’s box.

She used to keep it under her bed.

After she died, it disappeared.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at me.

“When I was a child…”

My voice shook.

“There was a box.””

My father went still.

“What box?””

“My mother’s.””

His face changed.

“Where is it?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at him.

“But Aunt Clara took it after the funeral.””

Nobody spoke.

My father’s expression turned cold.

“She knew.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“About what?””

My father looked at me.

“She knew your mother left something behind.””

Suddenly, my phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Another unknown number.

A picture appeared.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a photo of my aunt Clara.

Standing outside my house.

Taken that morning.

Below it was a message.

*You were never supposed to find the letter.*

Another message appeared.

*Now I have no choice.*

Then:

*Come alone if you want to know what your mother discovered.*

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“She has answers.””

“She has a trap.””

My father nodded.

“Daniel is right.””

I stared at the message.

For years, I wanted answers.

Why my mother died.

Why my father hid things.

Why strange things kept happening.

Now the person who knew the truth was asking me to come.

Alone.

My father took my phone.

“No one goes anywhere.””

But before he could do anything, another message appeared.

This time it wasn’t from Clara.

It was from Richard.

*If you bring your father, you’ll never know what your mother left behind.*

I looked at my father.

Then Daniel.

Then the screen.

And I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Richard knew exactly what I would do.

Because someone had been watching me for years.
