Chapter 13: The Doctor Who Knew Everything
Nobody spoke.
The final words of my mother’s recording echoed in my head.
The person who betrayed me is the same person who helped bring you into this world.
I felt like the ground beneath me had disappeared.
Because suddenly, every memory of my childhood felt different.
Every birthday.
Every family gathering.
Every conversation where someone said they knew me since I was born.
My father looked like he had aged ten years in a few seconds.
“Dr. Henry Lawson.””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Daniel looked at him.
“Who is that?””
My father didn’t answer.
I did.
“My mother’s doctor.””
The words tasted strange.
Because Dr. Lawson wasn’t just a name.
He was part of my family history.
He was the man who gave my mother hope.
The man who told my father he would do everything possible.
The man who held me as a newborn and told my parents I was healthy.
“He was there for everything,” I whispered.
My father nodded slowly.
“That was why we trusted him.””
Clara looked terrified.
“But why would he do this?””
Nobody answered.
The security expert looked at the recovered files.
“There may be more information.””
He opened the folder.
Several documents appeared.
Medical records.
Financial transfers.
Private communications.
My father leaned closer.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What did you find?””
He didn’t answer.
He just pointed.
A payment record.
From Richard Vale.
To Dr. Henry Lawson.
The date was twenty years ago.
The year my mother became sick.
My hands went cold.
“He was paid.””
My father nodded.
“By Richard.””
Daniel looked stunned.
“So your mother’s doctor was working with the man who wanted to destroy your family?””
My father looked at the screen.
“Yes.””
A painful silence followed.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For a moment, there was only breathing.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“Sarah.””
My blood ran cold.
Dr. Lawson.
“Doctor?””
Daniel immediately moved closer.
The voice on the other end sighed.
“I was hoping you would never find out.””
My father grabbed the phone.
“You son of a—”
“John.””
The doctor interrupted calmly.
“I know you’re angry.””
My father’s voice shook.
“You helped kill my wife.””
“No.””
The doctor sounded tired.
“I helped your wife understand the truth.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
The line went quiet.
Then:
“Your mother discovered Richard’s plan before anyone else.””
I listened carefully.
“She also discovered someone inside your family was helping him.””
Clara looked away.
My father looked at me.
“Who?””
Dr. Lawson continued.
“Your mother thought it was Clara.””
Clara closed her eyes.
“She was wrong.””
The doctor paused.
“She was afraid of the wrong person.””
My heart raced.
“Who was it?””
The doctor didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Sarah, before I tell you, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your mother wasn’t just investigating Richard.””
A pause.
“She was investigating your father.””
The room went completely still.
I looked at my father.
He looked shocked.
“No.””
Dr. Lawson continued.
“Your mother found financial records that connected John Carter to illegal activity.””
My father shook his head.
“That’s a lie.””
“I thought so too,” the doctor said.
“Until I saw the evidence.””
My stomach twisted.
I didn’t know what to believe.
My father.
My mother.
The people who had protected me.
The people who had hidden things.
The doctor spoke again.
“Sarah, your mother left a second recording.””
My breath stopped.
“A second one?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
The doctor hesitated.
“Your father has it.””
Everyone looked at my father.
He went completely silent.
My heart sank.
“Dad?””
He looked away.
And that was the moment I knew.
There was still one secret left.
“Dad.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
The phone slipped from my hand.
Because the question I had been asking all night finally had an answer.
May you like
Everyone had been hiding something.
But my father had been hiding the biggest secret.
