Chapter 12: My Mother’s Last Recording

The flash drive felt heavier than it should have.

A tiny piece of plastic.

A lifetime of secrets.

My father stared at it.

“Play it.””

I looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

He nodded.

“No more hiding.””

We connected it to the laptop.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a file appeared.

The name made my heart stop.

*For Sarah.*

I clicked.

The screen went black.

Then my mother appeared.

Older than the photographs.

Tired.

But smiling.

I covered my mouth.

“Mom…”

Daniel took my hand.

I didn’t pull away.

Not this time.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Sarah, if you’re watching this, then I’m gone.””

My eyes filled instantly.

“I’m sorry.””

Her voice shook.

“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””

The room was silent.

“I wanted to be there when you got married. I wanted to hold your baby. I wanted to see the woman you became.””

I wiped my tears.

My mother continued.

“But I need you to know something.””

She looked away from the camera.

“Your father did not betray me.””

My father closed his eyes.

A quiet breath escaped him.

“I knew he would blame himself.””

I looked at my father.

My mother continued.

“He tried to protect us.””

Then she leaned closer.

“But he trusted the wrong person.””

Everyone froze.

“Someone inside our family gave Richard information.””

My hands shook.

My mother’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I thought it was Clara.””

Clara looked down.

“I was wrong.””

The room became still.

My mother continued.

“It was someone much closer.””

My father leaned toward the screen.

“Who?””

As if she could hear him, my mother answered.

“The person who knew everything.””

A pause.

“The person who had access to our home.””

My heart raced.

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“The person who helped arrange my treatment.””

My father went pale.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He stood frozen.

Like he already knew.

My mother continued.

“I trusted this person because they were family.””

The video flickered.

Then my mother said the words that shattered everything.

“Sarah, the person responsible for what happened to me…”

The screen froze.

Everyone gasped.

The video stopped.

“No.””

I clicked again.

Nothing.

The file was damaged.

My father immediately stood.

“Fix it.””

The security expert grabbed the laptop.

“I’ll try.””

I looked at Clara.

“You knew?””

She was crying.

“I knew your mother suspected someone.””

“Who?””

She looked terrified.

“I never found out.””

My father walked away.

I followed him.

“Dad.””

He stopped.

“Why did you react like that?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Because I know who arranged her treatment.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

“Your mother’s doctor.””

My stomach dropped.

“The doctor?””

He nodded.

“The doctor who treated her for years.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked at the frozen screen.

“It means Richard wasn’t the only person close enough to hurt her.””

A notification appeared on the laptop.

The security expert looked up.

“We recovered part of the file.””

Everyone rushed closer.

The video restarted.

My mother’s face appeared again.

But this time, her expression was different.

Afraid.

“Sarah…”

She whispered.

“If you discover the truth…”

A pause.

“Do not trust anyone who tells you they were protecting you.””

The screen flickered.

Then one final sentence played.

A sentence that made my father step back.

A sentence that changed who I thought the enemy was.

“Because the person who betrayed me…”

May you like

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“…is the same person who helped bring you into this world.””
