Chapter 2: The Man Everyone Feared
My father didn’t raise his voice.
That was what scared people the most.
The room was filled with powerful executives, wealthy families, and people who spent their lives intimidating others.
But when my father walked in, every conversation stopped.
“Sarah.””
That was the first thing he said.
Not Linda.
Not Daniel.
Me.
He crossed the room quickly, removed his jacket, and wrapped it around my shoulders.
The moment I felt the fabric around me, everything I had been holding back collapsed.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
My father looked confused.
“Sorry for what?””
I looked down.
“For causing a scene.””
His expression hardened.
“Your dress was ripped open in front of fifty people, and you think you caused a scene?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
My father turned toward Daniel.
“You.””
Daniel straightened.
“Mr. Carter—”
“Don’t.””
My father’s voice was calm.
But the room became colder.
“You stood there while my pregnant daughter was attacked.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“It wasn’t like that.””
My father glanced at Linda.
“Then explain what it was like.””
Linda stepped forward.
“I caught your daughter stealing.””
Everyone looked at her.
Even Daniel.
My father’s eyes moved to the velvet pouch in her hand.
“Interesting.””
Linda lifted her chin.
“The ring was missing after Sarah went upstairs. Then it appeared in her purse.””
My father looked at me.
“Did you take that ring?””
“No.””
Not hesitation.
Not confusion.
Just truth.
My father nodded once.
“I believe you.””
The simple words almost broke me.
Because that was all I had wanted from Daniel.
One sentence.
One moment.
One choice.
Linda scoffed.
“Of course you believe her. She’s your daughter.””
My father looked at her.
“And you are her husband’s mother. Yet somehow, you believe the worst of her immediately.””
The room stayed silent.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Can everyone calm down? We need to figure out what happened.””
My father looked at him.
“No. We need to figure out who planned this.””
Linda’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A tiny flicker of fear.
My father noticed too.
He walked toward the table where my purse had been emptied.
“Who had access to this room?””
Linda crossed her arms.
“My guests.””
“Wrong answer.””
Her eyebrows lifted.
“What?””
“You said the ring disappeared after my daughter went upstairs. Who knew she went upstairs?””
Nobody spoke.
Then one woman near the dining area slowly raised her hand.
“I heard Linda mention it.””
My father turned.
“When?””
“About twenty minutes before the accusation.””
My stomach dropped.
Linda had told people.
Before anything happened.
My father looked back at her.
“You announced where your daughter-in-law was before you accused her.””
Linda’s expression hardened.
“That proves nothing.””
“No,” my father said.
“But it raises questions.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Let’s not turn this into an investigation at my parents’ anniversary party.””
I stared at him.
“Your mother ripped my dress.””
His eyes lowered.
“I know.””
“And you still care more about the party?””
“That’s not what I mean.””
“Then what do you mean, Daniel?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt.
More than I expected.
My father reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“I already called someone.””
Linda frowned.
“Who?””
“A security specialist.””
Her face changed.
“You’re accusing me?””
“I’m investigating.””
Ten minutes later, a man arrived carrying a laptop and a small case.
He connected to Linda’s home security system.
The guests watched as footage from the evening appeared on the screen.
The first camera showed me walking upstairs.
Then returning.
Then standing downstairs.
Exactly as I said.
Then the security expert paused.
“There’s something unusual.””
Everyone looked at him.
He enlarged the screen.
“The hallway camera was disabled for four minutes.””
Linda went pale.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
The man clicked another file.
“The system log shows the camera was turned off manually.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“By who?””
The man looked at the screen.
Then at Linda.
“It was accessed using the homeowner’s passcode.””
A murmur spread through the room.
Linda shook her head.
“That’s impossible.””
My father stepped closer.
“Your passcode.””
She said nothing.
The man continued.
“And there’s more.””
He opened another video.
A recording from earlier that afternoon.
The room watched as Linda walked into the bedroom.
Alone.
Holding a small jewelry box.
Then she looked directly at the camera.
And smiled.
My blood turned cold.
Because Linda wasn’t hiding a mistake.
She was preparing something.
The video continued.
Linda placed the diamond ring inside the box.
Then she picked up her phone.
And said four words that made Daniel’s face lose all color.
May you like
“Tonight, Sarah will finally…”
The recording cut off.
