Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Ring

Nobody moved.

The silence after the video ended felt heavier than shouting.

Linda stared at the frozen screen.

For the first time that night, she didn’t look like the woman who controlled every room she entered.

She looked caught.

Daniel turned slowly toward her.

“Mom.””

Just one word.

But there was disappointment in it.

Linda recovered quickly.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

My father gave a cold smile.

“That is what people say when the truth becomes inconvenient.””

Linda pointed at the screen.

“The video doesn’t show everything.””

“Correct,” my father said.

“So let’s continue.””

The security expert tapped a few keys.

Another recording appeared.

This one showed Linda entering the guest bathroom.

The same bathroom I had used.

She carried something in her hand.

A small velvet pouch.

My breath caught.

The same pouch.

The one found in my purse.

Daniel stared.

“That’s…”

“Yes,” my father said.

“The same pouch.””

Linda stepped back.

“No. That’s not possible.””

I looked at her.

“You put it there.””

Her eyes snapped toward me.

“You think I would do that?””

I almost couldn’t believe she asked.

After everything.

After tearing my dress.

After humiliating me.

“You already did.””

The room watched her.

Not me.

Her.

And I realized something important.

The moment people saw the truth, they stopped looking for reasons to doubt me.

Linda’s voice became sharper.

“You have always wanted to separate Daniel from his family.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“You came into his life and changed everything.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Mom…”

“No,” Linda said.

“She needs to hear this.””

She stepped closer.

“You think I don’t know what you’ve done?””

My father moved slightly forward.

“Careful.””

But I raised my hand.

I wanted to hear.

Because suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t about a ring.

It had never been about a ring.

Linda had been waiting for a reason.

A reason to attack me.

“Why?”” I asked quietly.

Her face tightened.

“Because you took my son.””

I almost laughed.

“Daniel is your son. Not your property.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Linda’s eyes filled with anger.

“You don’t understand what I sacrificed for him.””

“And that gives you the right to destroy my life?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at the floor.

That hurt too.

Because even now, he was struggling between his mother and his wife.

My father noticed.

“Daniel.””

Daniel looked up.

“You need to decide something.””

“What?””

“Whether you are a husband or just a son who never learned how to say no.””

The room became uncomfortable.

Daniel swallowed.

“Mr. Carter, this is my family.””

My father nodded.

“Your wife and unborn child are your family too.””

That sentence stayed in the air.

I touched my stomach.

My baby moved.

A reminder that this wasn’t just about me anymore.

I had spent months trying to keep peace.

I had ignored Linda’s comments.

Her criticism.

The way she made me feel like an outsider.

Because I loved Daniel.

Because I believed marriage meant standing together.

But tonight showed me something.

A marriage cannot survive when one person is always standing alone.

The security expert cleared his throat.

“There’s one more thing.””

Everyone turned.

He looked at Linda.

“The ring itself.””

Linda’s expression changed.

“What about it?””

“The diamond has a tracking chip.””

A few guests whispered.

My eyebrows lifted.

“A tracking chip?””

My father nodded.

“Some expensive jewelry companies add them for insurance purposes.””

The expert opened an app on his phone.

“And according to the location history…”

He paused.

My heart started racing.

“Where was it?””

He looked at the screen.

“The ring was never in Sarah’s possession.””

Linda’s face went pale.

“It was tracked from the bedroom.””

A pause.

“Then moved into the kitchen.””

Another pause.

“Then placed inside Sarah’s purse.””

Nobody spoke.

The evidence was there.

Clear.

Impossible to deny.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Mom…”

Linda suddenly looked at me.

And something changed.

The fear disappeared.

Replaced by anger.

Pure anger.

“You think you’ve won?””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled.

Not the confident smile from earlier.

Something darker.

“You really think this was about a ring?””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Explain.””

Linda looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“I know something about your wife that you don’t.””

The room froze.

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Linda took one step forward.

May you like

And then she said the one sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Ask Sarah where she was the night before your wedding.””
