Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Shadows
I stared at the message.
The ballroom noise disappeared.
The whispers.
The footsteps.
The shocked voices.
Everything faded.
Only those words remained.
Your real father.
My fingers tightened around my phone.
Vanessa noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I didn’t answer.
My father looked at me.
“Ethan?””
I slowly handed him the phone.
The second he read the message, all color left his face.
“Delete it.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Delete it now.””
“Why?””
His voice became urgent.
“Because he wants you angry.””
That made me stop.
“You know him.””
My father looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
“How?””
A long silence.
Then he answered.
“Because I watched him destroy everything before.””
The ballroom guests were still there, watching.
Rachel immediately spoke.
“We need to leave.””
My father nodded.
For once, I agreed.
Not because I trusted him completely.
Because I realized something.
Whatever was happening was bigger than a wedding.
We moved into a private conference room connected to the ballroom.
Only a few people followed.
Me.
My father.
Rachel.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
And Diane.
I almost told Diane to leave.
But something stopped me.
She knew more than she admitted.
Rachel locked the door.
Then she looked at me.
“Ethan, you need to hear this carefully.””
I sat down.
“I’m listening.””
She opened a file.
“Victor Hale was once your mother’s closest partner.””
I nodded.
“You said that.””
“But there is more.””
She placed a photograph on the table.
It showed my mother.
And Victor.
They looked young.
Happy.
I hated that seeing him smile bothered me.
“Your mother loved him,” Rachel said.
The words hit harder than expected.
My father looked away.
I noticed.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you still stayed?””
My father looked at me.
“Because your mother needed someone who would protect her.””
The answer silenced me.
Rachel continued.
“Victor was brilliant. Charming. People trusted him.””
She paused.
“Until they saw what he wanted.””
“What?””
“Control.””
Daniel added:
“He believed emotions were weaknesses.””
I looked at Diane.
“And you worked with him?””
Diane crossed her arms.
“I was young.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
The room went quiet.
“How long?””
“Years ago.””
“Before my wedding?””
She didn’t respond.
That was enough.
Vanessa looked at her mother.
“You knew this man was involved?””
Diane looked at her daughter.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Vanessa laughed sadly.
“You keep saying that.””
Diane’s expression changed.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Nobody argued.
Because everyone knew.
Then my father noticed something in the documents.
“Wait.””
He grabbed the file.
“This signature.””
Rachel looked.
“What about it?””
My father pointed.
“This isn’t Victor’s.””
I leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
My father’s face hardened.
“It means someone else helped him.””
A sudden knock interrupted us.
Everyone froze.
Rachel approached the door.
“Who is it?””
A voice answered.
“Delivery.””
My father immediately stood.
“Don’t open it.””
Rachel stepped back.
The person outside knocked again.
“Mr. Bennett, this is important.””
My father looked at Daniel.
“Call security.””
Daniel reached for his phone.
Then the door handle moved.
Everyone froze.
The lock clicked.
The door slowly opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Confident.
Wearing an expensive black suit.
He looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“Ethan.””
My father stepped between us.
“Victor.””
The man smiled wider.
“So protective after all these years.””
My heart stopped.
The man looked past my father.
At me.
“I’ve waited a long time to meet my son.””
Vanessa moved closer to me.
Victor noticed.
Then he laughed softly.
“Interesting.””
He looked at her.
“Did they tell you why this marriage mattered?””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a document.
Then placed it on the table.
“You were never supposed to marry Vanessa because of love.””
Everyone stared.
Victor smiled.
“You were supposed to marry her because it would give me access to everything your father stole from me.””
My father’s face darkened.
“I stole nothing.””
Victor looked at him.
“You took my family.””
May you like
Then he looked back at me.
“And now I’m here to take back mine.””
