Chapter 6: The Person Who Planned Everything
The words hung in the air.
The Bennett inheritance was.
Not me.
Not my wedding.
Not my future.
The money.
For years, I thought my life was simple.
My father was a hardworking man.
My fiancée was someone I loved.
Her family was wealthy.
Mine wasn’t.
Now, in a single night, every assumption had collapsed.
I looked at Diane.
“So this entire wedding…”
She looked away.
I finished.
“Was a business deal?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“Ethan, please believe me.””
I wanted to.
I really wanted to.
But my entire world had become a room full of people hiding things.
My father walked toward me.
“Son.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
He paused.
“About the marriage clause?””
“Yes.””
His silence hurt.
“Dad.””
“I suspected.””
I stepped back.
“You suspected?””
“I didn’t know if Diane would try anything.””
“Then why let me marry her?””
His expression broke.
“Because I believed Vanessa loved you.””
Everyone went quiet.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“And because I believed you were different from your family.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I am.””
Diane looked at her daughter.
“Vanessa.””
“No, Mom.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“No more.””
That surprised everyone.
She turned toward me.
“I should have stopped her earlier.””
I stared.
“What do you mean?””
She swallowed.
“When my mother asked me to sign papers, she told me they were about protecting my inheritance.””
My heart sank.
“And you signed?””
“I trusted her.””
She looked ashamed.
“I didn’t read everything.””
Diane looked angry.
“You’re being dramatic.””
Vanessa turned.
“Dramatic?””
Her voice rose.
“You humiliated Ethan’s father.””
Diane looked offended.
“I was trying to help this family.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You were trying to control everything.””
For the first time, Diane looked powerless.
Rachel quietly gathered the papers.
“There is still one problem.””
Nobody wanted to hear those words.
“What problem?”” I asked.
She looked at the contract.
“The person who forged Vanessa’s signature had access to the legal files.””
My father frowned.
“Only a few people had access.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
She opened her laptop.
“The system shows who accessed the documents.””
The room waited.
She typed.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
“Rachel?””
She looked at my father.
“Arthur…”
“What?””
She slowly turned the screen.
“The files were accessed three days before the wedding.””
My stomach tightened.
“By who?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The fear in her eyes told me everything.
My father stepped closer.
“Say it.””
Rachel whispered:
“Ethan.””
I stared.
“What?””
“The access came from your account.””
The room exploded.
People started talking.
Vanessa looked shocked.
My father looked confused.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel shook her head.
“I know.””
I felt anger rising.
“Someone used my account.””
“Maybe,” Rachel said.
“But there’s more.””
She opened another file.
A security recording appeared.
The ballroom disappeared around me.
Everyone watched the screen.
The footage showed an office.
My office.
Someone sitting at my desk.
Someone opening the documents.
The person’s face was hidden.
Then the person turned slightly.
Just enough.
Enough for me to recognize the watch on their wrist.
A watch I had seen every day for years.
My father’s old watch.
The same one he wore when he came to my wedding.
I looked at him.
My father looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
The person in the video stood up.
And before leaving, they placed something on my desk.
A photograph.
The camera zoomed in.
The picture showed my mother.
But not the picture I knew.
This one showed her standing beside someone else.
Someone who looked exactly like me.
Rachel whispered:
“Arthur…”
My father couldn’t speak.
Because the person in the photograph was holding a document.
A birth certificate.
May you like
With my name on it.
And a different father listed underneath. :::
