Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Old Jacket
Nobody moved.
The ballroom felt frozen in time.
The same people who had been smiling moments earlier were now staring at my father like they were looking at a stranger.
Diane was the first person to speak.
She forced out a laugh.
“This is ridiculous.””
Rachel looked at her.
“Excuse me?””
Diane stepped forward.
“I don’t know what kind of performance this is, but nobody here believes it.””
My father sighed.
“Diane, please.””
She looked at him.
“You expect us to believe you’re some important businessman?””
My father didn’t answer.
That bothered me.
I had spent my whole life knowing him as a quiet man. A man who avoided attention. A man who never talked about himself.
But Rachel looked terrified.
Not of him.
For him.
Vanessa stood beside me, confused.
“Ethan,” she whispered.
“What is happening?””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
She glanced toward my father.
“You never told me your dad was…”
She stopped.
I finished the sentence.
“What? Rich?””
She looked away.
That silence told me everything.
My father noticed.
He walked toward the nearest empty table and sat down.
The little gift box rested in his hands.
“Dad,” I said quietly.
He looked up.
“Can we talk?””
He nodded.
We moved away from the crowd.
Rachel followed.
My father looked at her.
“Rachel, you shouldn’t have come here.””
She shook her head.
“I had no choice, Mr. Bennett.””
“Arthur,” he corrected gently.
“You know I don’t like that.””
Rachel swallowed.
“Arthur, the company is facing a decision that only you can make.””
I stared.
“What company?””
My father looked at the floor.
For years, I had asked him why he never wanted a better house. Why he drove an old truck. Why he wore the same clothes.
His answer was always simple.
“Money changes people.””
I never realized he was speaking from experience.
“Dad,” I said.
“What is going on?””
He took a long breath.
“Before your mother and I got married, I built a company with my brother.””
I blinked.
“You had a company?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
He looked at Rachel.
She answered.
“The Bennett Group.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Then I noticed several guests whispering.
One older man near the bar suddenly stepped backward.
“Wait…”
He stared at my father.
“Arthur Bennett?””
My father gave a small nod.
The man’s face changed.
“My God.””
Diane heard him.
“What?””
The man looked uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Carter, your daughter’s fiancé’s father is…”
He stopped.
Rachel finished.
“The founder of one of the largest private investment groups in the country.””
The silence that followed was louder than any music.
Vanessa stared at me.
“You didn’t know?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My father looked embarrassed.
“I never wanted that life around you.””
Diane’s face turned pale.
“But…”
She looked at his jacket.
His shoes.
His old watch.
“You live like this?””
My father looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He smiled sadly.
“Because I wanted to know who people respected when they thought I had nothing.””
Nobody had an answer.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Ethan, why didn’t you tell me?””
I looked at her.
“Because I didn’t know.””
Her face changed.
The realization hit her.
She hadn’t just insulted my father.
She had judged someone she knew nothing about.
My father opened the gift box.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed me as a child sitting on his shoulders.
“I wanted to give you this today.””
His voice softened.
“Not money. Not property. Just a reminder.””
I looked at the picture.
“Dad…”
Before I could say anything else, Diane suddenly walked over.
Her attitude had completely changed.
“Arthur, I think there has been a misunderstanding.””
My father looked at her.
“No.””
One word.
Calm.
Final.
Diane forced a smile.
“I was emotional.””
“You were honest.””
Her smile disappeared.
The ballroom watched as my father stood.
For the first time, he didn’t look like a man trying to disappear.
He looked like someone who had spent years choosing humility.
Then Rachel’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed immediately.
“What?””
Everyone noticed.
She listened for several seconds.
Then she looked directly at my father.
“Arthur…”
My father’s face tightened.
“What happened?””
Rachel slowly lowered the phone.
“The board found the original documents.””
My father stood still.
“What documents?””
Rachel looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
May you like
Then back at my father.
“The ones proving who actually owns the Carter family company.””
