Chapter 13: The Witness My Mother Left Behind
The room went silent.
Not the uncomfortable silence from earlier.
Not the silence of people waiting for gossip.
This was different.
This was the silence that came before a truth destroyed everything.
I stared at Lucas.
My brother.
A man I had met less than an hour ago.
A man who carried my mother’s eyes.
And now he was saying he knew who killed her.
My voice barely worked.
“Who?””
Lucas looked at Victor.
Then at my father.
Then back at me.
“I was six years old.””
Nobody moved.
“My mother told me to stay hidden.””
My heart tightened.
“My mother?””
Lucas nodded.
“Your mother.””
The words felt strange.
My mother.
Our mother.
The woman I remembered through photographs and old stories.
“She knew something bad was coming,” Lucas continued.
I stepped closer.
“Where were you?””
“In the car.””
The room changed.
My father closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
Lucas continued.
“Your mother told me not to make a sound. She said she was going to meet someone and come right back.””
His voice cracked.
“She never came back.””
I looked at my father.
He looked like he was carrying the weight of the world.
“Who was she meeting?””
Lucas looked directly at Daniel.
Everyone turned.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“No.””
Lucas nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
Daniel whispered:
“You don’t understand.””
Lucas stepped forward.
“I understand everything.””
My father looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel said nothing.
That was enough.
I felt anger rise inside me.
“All these years.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew there was another child.””
Daniel looked away.
“I did.””
“And you never told me?””
“I promised your mother.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone promised my mother.””
I pointed around the room.
“And everyone decided I didn’t deserve the truth.””
Daniel accepted the anger.
“You’re right.””
That answer somehow made it worse.
Lucas continued.
“That night, I saw Victor arrive.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“Careful.””
Lucas ignored him.
“He was angry.””
The room became colder.
“My mother was holding documents.””
Rachel immediately looked at the files.
“The evidence.””
Lucas nodded.
“She told Victor she would expose him.””
Victor smiled.
“You were six years old. You don’t remember everything.””
Lucas looked at him.
“I remember enough.””
Victor stepped closer.
“You remember what people told you.””
“No.””
Lucas’s voice became stronger.
“I remember your voice.””
Nobody spoke.
Lucas continued.
“You told her she ruined everything.””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t know what you heard.””
“I heard you say she should disappear.””
My father moved forward.
“That’s enough.””
Victor looked at him.
“No, Arthur.””
For the first time, Victor looked angry.
“You always wanted to be the hero.””
He pointed at Lucas.
“But you forget something.””
Everyone watched.
“You weren’t there after.””
Lucas froze.
Victor smiled.
“You left that night too.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at Lucas.
“What does he mean?””
Lucas didn’t answer.
That frightened me.
“Lucas?””
He closed his eyes.
“I ran.””
“Ran?””
“I was scared.””
His voice broke.
“I saw my mother on the ground. I heard people yelling. I thought everyone was going to die.””
I softened for a second.
Then he continued.
“And I found someone.””
My father looked up.
“Who?””
Lucas looked at him.
“You.””
My father froze.
“What?””
“You found me.””
The room stopped.
Lucas looked at Arthur.
“You carried me away from the car.””
My father’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know who you were.””
Lucas nodded.
“I know.””
“You were just a child.””
“I know.””
My father covered his face.
“I thought you were gone.””
Lucas swallowed.
“You thought I died.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked between them.
My father had known Lucas existed.
But not who he was.
Not that he was my brother.
The pieces started connecting.
Then Rachel suddenly picked up a document.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
She looked shocked.
“There’s a second recording.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“What?””
Rachel pulled out the device.
“There was another file hidden.””
She pressed play.
Static.
Then my mother’s voice.
“If Ethan is hearing this, then Lucas survived.””
My breathing stopped.
My mother continued.
“Arthur, I’m sorry.””
My father broke.
The recording continued.
“You will think you failed me. You didn’t.””
A pause.
“You saved both of my sons.””
I looked at Lucas.
Both sons.
The words hurt.
And healed.
At the same time.
Then my mother said:
“But the person responsible is not the one you think.””
Everyone froze.
My mother continued.
“Victor had help.””
Victor’s face changed.
The recording ended.
Rachel looked at the screen.
“One final message.””
She pressed another file.
A different voice appeared.
A voice I recognized.
Diane.
Everyone looked at her.
The recording played.
“I did what you asked.””
Diane’s face went white.
Victor whispered:
“Turn that off.””
But it was too late.
The entire room heard Diane’s voice.
“I moved the documents.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“But I never agreed to kill her.””
