The Man They Called Trash / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Father I Never Knew

The room stopped breathing.

That was the only way I could describe it.

Hundreds of people stood inside the ballroom, but nobody made a sound.

Everyone was staring at the photograph.

Everyone was staring at my father.

And everyone was staring at me.

The birth certificate on the screen looked impossible.

A different father’s name.

A different story.

A different life.

I looked at Arthur Bennett, the man who had raised me.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who sat beside me during every fever.

The man who worked until his hands cracked so I could have a better future.

“Dad…”

The word barely came out.

He didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed locked on the screen.

Rachel quickly closed the laptop.

“Maybe we should move somewhere private.””

“No.””

My voice surprised everyone.

I stepped forward.

“No more secrets.””

My father looked at me.

“Ethan.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I spent my whole life thinking I knew who I was.””

My throat tightened.

“Tonight, I found out my wedding was built on lies, my mother left hidden documents, and someone is trying to destroy my family.””

I looked around the room.

“I’m done being the last person to know.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father sat down.

The strong, quiet man who had always seemed unbreakable suddenly looked old.

Older than I had ever seen him.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

I stared at him.

“Find out what?””

He looked at the floor.

“The truth about your birth.””

A chill moved through me.

“So it’s true?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Diane looked stunned.

Even she didn’t know.

I took a step back.

“No.””

My father looked up.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re my father.””

He stood immediately.

“I am.””

“Then why is there another name on that paper?””

His expression broke.

“Because biology is not what made me your father.””

Those words should have comforted me.

They didn’t.

Not yet.

Rachel stepped forward carefully.

“There is something you need to understand.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The document on the screen is real.””

My father looked at her.

“Rachel.””

She hesitated.

“But the story behind it is incomplete.””

I turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

She opened the folder again.

“Your mother never wanted this information hidden forever.””

My father looked angry.

“She wanted Ethan protected.””

“Protected from what?””

Rachel looked at Diane.

Then at me.

“From the man named on that certificate.””

The room became quiet again.

I stared.

“Who is he?””

My father didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing.

Until I saw Diane’s reaction.

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“You know him,” I said.

Diane immediately looked away.

“I knew of him.””

My anger returned.

“Everyone knows something except me.””

Vanessa stepped toward me.

“Ethan…”

I raised my hand.

Not to silence her.

Just because I couldn’t handle another explanation.

Rachel continued.

“Victor Hale was your mother’s business partner before Arthur entered her life.””

My father looked away.

“He was dangerous.””

“How?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“He believed everything belonged to him.””

I laughed without humor.

“So my real father was a terrible person?””

My father looked at me.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

That surprised me.

“No?””

He shook his head.

“People are complicated, Ethan.””

I stared.

“He abandoned us.””

My father’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Your mother never told you everything.””

“Because she was protecting me?””

“Yes.””

“From him?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the birth certificate again.

My entire identity felt like a puzzle someone else had built.

Then Daniel, the man who delivered the letter, spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

He reached into his briefcase.

“This is why your mother waited until your wedding day.””

He placed another document on the table.

I looked down.

“What is it?””

“Your mother’s final statement.””

My hands went cold.

I opened it.

The first line stopped me.

Ethan, if you are reading this, then Victor Hale has returned.

I looked up.

“Returned?””

My father stood quickly.

“What?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Victor Hale disappeared fifteen years ago.””

My heart raced.

“And?””

Daniel looked toward the ballroom entrance.

“He was seen tonight.””

Everyone followed his gaze.

The doors were still closed.

But the fear on Daniel’s face told me something.

“He’s here.””

A second later, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

The words were simple.

*You finally found out the truth, son.*

My hands started shaking.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*Now come meet your real father.*
