Chapter 12: The Heir Nobody Expected
Nobody spoke.
Not one person.
Victor’s words sat between us like a weapon.
My mother left everything to someone else.
I looked at my father.
His face told me the truth before he spoke.
“Is that true?””
He looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
“Dad.””
His voice was barely audible.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“How many more things are there?””
My father looked at me.
“Ethan…”
“How many?””
He couldn’t answer.
Vanessa started crying quietly.
Diane looked broken.
Even Victor stopped smiling for a moment.
Because my pain was real.
I wasn’t angry about money.
I wasn’t angry about inheritance.
I was angry because everyone had decided my life was something they could manage without me.
Rachel opened the folder.
“There is another document.””
I laughed.
“Of course there is.””
She looked hurt.
“I know how this sounds.””
“It sounds like everyone has a secret document except me.””
Nobody argued.
Rachel placed the paper down.
“Your mother created a trust.””
I looked.
“A trust for who?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“For a child.””
My stomach tightened.
“I don’t have siblings.””
My father looked at the floor.
I stared at him.
“No.””
He closed his eyes.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
The answer came before the truth.
“No.””
Victor smiled slightly.
“There it is.””
My father looked at me.
“Your mother had another child.””
The room spun.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“What?””
“She was pregnant before you were born.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
My father shook his head.
“She lost the baby.””
I looked at Victor.
“Then what is he talking about?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel whispered:
“Because the trust wasn’t created for a child who died.””
My heart stopped.
She looked at me.
“It was created for a child who survived.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
Rachel opened the final page.
“The beneficiary is listed as…”
She stopped.
Then looked toward the door.
Everyone followed her eyes.
The door opened.
A young man stood there.
About my age.
He looked nervous.
Lost.
Like he didn’t belong.
But I knew immediately.
Not because I recognized his face.
Because I recognized the eyes.
My mother’s eyes.
The man looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody moved.
He stepped inside.
“My name is Lucas Hale.””
Victor smiled.
“Finally.””
I stared.
Lucas looked at me.
“I didn’t want to come here.””
My voice shook.
“Who are you?””
He swallowed.
Then answered:
“Your brother.””
The room exploded.
My father sat down.
Diane covered her mouth.
Vanessa whispered my name.
And Victor looked satisfied.
Because this was exactly what he wanted.
Rachel held the trust document.
“Lucas is the original beneficiary.””
I looked at my father.
“Why?””
He couldn’t look at me.
Lucas answered.
“Because your mother believed I needed protection.””
I stared.
“You knew my mother?””
He nodded.
“She raised me for six years.””
The words destroyed me.
Six years.
Six years my mother had lived a life I knew nothing about.
Six years she had loved another child.
Another family.
Another secret.
I looked at Victor.
“You knew?””
He smiled.
“Yes.””
“Then why tell me now?””
His smile widened.
“Because now you understand.””
I frowned.
“Understand what?””
Victor stepped closer.
“That Arthur isn’t your biggest enemy.””
My father looked up.
Victor pointed at Lucas.
“He is.””
Everyone froze.
Lucas looked shocked.
“What?””
Victor smiled.
“Because he knows the truth about your mother’s death.””
I turned toward Lucas.
My voice barely worked.
“What truth?””
Lucas looked terrified.
Then he whispered:
“I was there that night.””
May you like
And my brother’s next words changed everything.
“I saw who killed her.””
