Chapter 9: The Truth Sarah Buried

The pendant fell from my fingers.

It hit the concrete floor with a tiny metallic sound.

But inside that warehouse, it sounded like a gunshot.

Everyone stared.

Ricardo moved first.

“Don’t touch it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

Sarah’s voice was still coming from the phone.

“Clara?””

I picked it up.

“Sarah.””

My voice broke.

“You’re alive.””

A shaky breath.

“I’m sorry you found out this way.””

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My anger finally broke through.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””

Silence.

Then Sarah whispered:

“You’re right.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why did you leave me?””

The question came out smaller than I wanted.

A pause.

Then:

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I could have helped you.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“That’s why I was afraid.””

I looked at Ricardo.

He was listening.

Everyone was.

Sarah continued.

“Clara, the necklace isn’t just a key.””

I picked it up carefully.

“What is it?””

“It contains proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“Everything.””

The warehouse became silent.

Sarah’s voice lowered.

“Who took Leo.””

“Who attacked us.””

“Who caused the explosion.””

Ricardo closed his eyes.

I saw the pain on his face.

“Sarah,” he said quietly.

She heard him.

“Ricardo.””

The way she said his name hurt.

There was love there.

And fear.

“I never stopped loving you.””

His expression broke.

“Then why did you leave?””

A long silence.

“Because I saw what happened that night.””

Everyone looked at him.

Sarah continued.

“You weren’t yourself.””

Ricardo’s breathing changed.

“I was drugged.””

“What?””

“I found out later.””

Her voice trembled.

“Someone gave you something before the explosion.””

Marco suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Everyone turned.

Sarah heard him.

“Marco.””

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“You knew?””

Sarah laughed sadly.

“You were always terrible at hiding your guilt.””

Marco’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know you switched Leo.””

The room froze.

Marco said nothing.

Ricardo looked at him.

“What?””

Sarah continued.

“You weren’t trying to protect him.””

Her voice became colder.

“You were trying to use him.””

I looked at Leo.

My heart broke.

Marco had been around this child for years.

He had smiled at him.

Held him.

And betrayed him.

Ricardo stepped toward Marco.

“You changed my son?””

Marco looked at him.

“You never deserved him.””

The words were enough.

Ricardo’s anger exploded.

But before he could move, gunfire erupted.

The warehouse lights shattered.

Everyone dropped.

I grabbed Leo and pulled him behind a concrete pillar.

Ricardo covered us.

“Stay down!””

Shots echoed.

People screamed.

Then silence.

When I looked up, Marco was gone.

Again.

But this time, he left something behind.

A small device.

Ricardo picked it up.

His face changed.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

“A recording.””

He pressed play.

A voice filled the warehouse.

Ricardo’s own voice.

But younger.

Angrier.

“You don’t understand what you’ve done.””

Then Sarah’s voice.

“Please stop.””

A crash.

A scream.

Then Ricardo’s voice again.

“I warned you.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Ricardo stared at the device.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Is it?””

His eyes met mine.

And I saw something worse than guilt.

Confusion.

Because he truly didn’t remember.

Then Leo touched my arm.

“Auntie Clara.””

I looked down.

“What?””

He pointed toward the warehouse exit.

A small figure stood in the rain.

A woman.

Watching us.

My breath stopped.

Ricardo turned.

The woman stepped into the light.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

Sarah.

She looked at me.

Then at Leo.

Then at Ricardo.

And whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Ricardo couldn’t move.

Neither could I.

After fourteen months of believing she was dead…

My sister was standing ten feet away.

But she wasn’t smiling.

She looked terrified.

Because behind her was someone holding a gun.

And the person holding it was the one person nobody expected.

May you like

Victor Vance.

Her own father.
