Chapter 3: The Secret Inside The Necklace
I stared at the message until the screen blurred.
The woman in the picture was Sarah.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
Sarah.
Alive.
Her hair was longer than I remembered, and her face looked tired, but there was no mistaking her.
My sister.
Ricardo walked toward me.
“What happened?””
I locked my phone instinctively.
Something about the message felt wrong.
Not just threatening.
Personal.
He noticed.
“Clara.””
I looked up.
His eyes narrowed.
“Show me.””
I hesitated.
Then I handed him the phone.
The moment he saw the picture, his entire body stiffened.
“Where did you get this?””
“Someone texted me.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Ricardo zoomed in on the image.
“She’s standing outside an old Moretti property.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Your property?””
He nodded.
“An abandoned family estate.””
“Why would she be there?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Ricardo Moretti always had an answer.
Unless he already knew the truth.
Leo climbed down from the couch.
“Daddy?””
Ricardo immediately softened.
“Yes, buddy?””
“Are we finding Mommy?””
The question destroyed him.
He knelt down.
“Yes.””
Leo looked at me.
“And Auntie Clara too?””
I smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
The little boy nodded.
“Mommy said you would help.””
I froze.
“What?””
Ricardo looked at him.
“When did she say that?””
Leo rubbed his eyes.
“Before Uncle Marco brought her.””
The room became silent again.
I crouched beside him.
“Leo, sweetheart, what did your mommy tell you?””
He thought carefully.
“She said if anything bad happened…”
He looked at my necklace.
“She said the heart would bring us to Auntie Clara.””
My hand immediately covered the pendant.
Ricardo noticed.
“Take it off.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Take off the necklace.””
His voice wasn’t angry.
It was urgent.
Slowly, I removed the chain.
The small heart pendant rested in my palm.
Ricardo stared at it.
“That isn’t jewelry.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
He reached out but stopped before touching it.
“Sarah was hiding something.””
I laughed nervously.
“Sarah? My Sarah?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No. She hated secrets.””
Ricardo looked at me.
“Then why did she hide a key inside that necklace?””
My blood went cold.
“A key?””
He pointed.
“Look closer.””
I turned the pendant over.
There was a tiny line I had never noticed before.
My fingers shook as I pressed against it.
The heart opened.
Inside was a small metal piece.
A key.
I stared at it.
“How did you know?””
Ricardo’s expression darkened.
“Because Sarah had another necklace.””
My heartbeat slowed.
“What?””
“She gave me one.””
He looked toward the window.
“Before the explosion, she told me if anything happened, I needed to find the truth.””
I swallowed.
“You thought she was talking about her death.””
“Yes.””
“But she was talking about this.””
Ricardo nodded.
Before either of us could speak, the apartment lights went out.
Leo gasped.
The room went completely dark.
Then came the sound.
A window breaking.
Ricardo moved instantly.
He grabbed Leo and pulled him behind him.
“Stay down.””
I heard footsteps.
Someone was inside.
A shadow moved across the hallway.
Ricardo reached for the weapon hidden under his jacket.
“Whoever you are,” he said, “you made a mistake.””
A voice answered from the darkness.
“No, Ricardo.””
The voice was familiar.
Too familiar.
“You made the mistake of trusting the wrong woman.””
The lights suddenly returned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Ricardo’s face changed.
“Impossible.””
The man looked at Leo.
Then at me.
“Hello, Clara.””
I had never seen him before.
But Ricardo knew exactly who he was.
Because the color drained from his face.
“Your father is dead,” Ricardo whispered.
The man smiled.
“He wanted you to think that.””
Leo buried his face against Ricardo.
I stared between them.
“Who is he?””
Ricardo didn’t answer.
The stranger did.
“I’m the reason Sarah disappeared.””
He took one step forward.
“And I’m the only person who knows why she left you a message saying not to trust Ricardo Moretti.””
He looked directly at me.
Then he said the words that shattered everything:
“Your sister wasn’t running from him, Clara.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was running from what he did.””
