Chapter 13: The Empire Built On Betrayal

The room felt smaller with every second.

Ricardo stood frozen.

His father stood across from him.

And between them was a decade of secrets.

A decade of lies.

A decade of pain neither of them had spoken about.

“You’re alive,” Ricardo whispered.

His father smiled.

“Disappointed?””

Ricardo’s face hardened.

“No.””

A pause.

“I’m trying to understand how the man who taught me loyalty could betray everyone he claimed to protect.””

The older man laughed softly.

“Loyalty?””

He looked around the hidden room.

“You still believe that word means something in our world?””

Sarah held Leo tightly.

I stood beside Ricardo, watching him struggle.

For the first time, I understood something.

Ricardo Moretti wasn’t afraid of enemies.

He was afraid of becoming his father.

“What was the explosion?”” Ricardo asked.

His father walked closer.

“A lesson.””

Sarah’s expression changed.

“You called it a lesson?””

“Yes.””

“You almost killed your own son.””

The old man looked at her.

“And yet he survived.””

The cruelty of his words made my stomach turn.

Ricardo stepped forward.

“You used Sarah.””

“I used everyone.””

The answer was so calm it was terrifying.

“Your mother. Your friends. Your wife.””

His eyes moved to Leo.

“Even your son.””

Ricardo’s hands clenched.

“Don’t look at him.””

His father smiled.

“There’s the weakness.””

“What?””

“Love.””

The old man shook his head.

“You always had too much of it.””

Ricardo laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed my family because I loved them?””

“No.””

His father’s expression darkened.

“Because you chose them over the empire.””

Silence.

Then Sarah spoke.

“Ricardo was never like you.””

The old man looked at her.

“You were the problem, Sarah.””

I felt Ricardo tense.

“You taught him compassion.””

Sarah stared back.

“And you taught him cruelty.””

The old man smiled.

“Exactly.””

He turned toward me.

“And Clara.””

My body stiffened.

“You were the final piece.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Sarah looked terrified.

“No.””

Her reaction told me enough.

“What does he mean?””

The old man smiled.

“Your sister always had a weakness.””

He pointed toward Sarah.

“She believed people could be saved.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Saved from what?””

Nobody answered.

The old man continued.

“Years ago, Sarah discovered that Ricardo’s organization was built on secrets.””

Ricardo interrupted.

“My organization?””

His father laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

He stepped closer.

“You thought you inherited power.””

A pause.

“You inherited a prison.””

The words hit him.

“What are you saying?””

“Every major decision. Every alliance. Every enemy.””

His father smiled.

“I controlled them.””

My heart sank.

Marco.

Antonio.

The explosion.

Everything.

“You created all of this.””

“Yes.””

Ricardo looked at Sarah.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I tried.””

She swallowed.

“The night of the explosion, I was going to tell you everything.””

Ricardo’s face changed.

“But then?””

“You found out.””

“What?””

“That your father was responsible.””

The room went silent.

Ricardo touched his head.

Fragments.

Memories.

A hospital room.

Fire.

Sarah screaming.

“I remember.””

Everyone froze.

Ricardo closed his eyes.

“I remember the car.””

His breathing became uneven.

“Sarah was there.””

She stepped closer.

“Yes.””

“You were trying to warn me.””

“Yes.””

“And my father…”

She nodded.

“He drugged you.””

The old man sighed.

“Such dramatic storytelling.””

Ricardo opened his eyes.

Cold.

Focused.

“You tried to make me kill my own wife.””

“I tried to remove your weakness.””

Ricardo looked at Leo.

Then at Sarah.

Then at me.

Something changed.

The fear disappeared.

“You failed.””

His father smiled.

“Did I?””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The old man answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

Marco.

I felt sick.

He was alive.

Again.

“You need to leave,” Marco said.

Ricardo’s father frowned.

“What happened?””

“The police are here.””

A pause.

“And they’re not alone.””

The old man’s expression changed.

“Who?””

Marco answered:

“The FBI.””

Nobody moved.

Ricardo stared.

“You called them?””

Marco’s voice came through the phone.

“Yes.””

The old man’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Marco hesitated.

Then:

“Because I finally remembered who the real enemy was.””

The call ended.

Ricardo looked at his father.

“You lost.””

But his father smiled.

“No.””

He looked at Leo.

“I still have one thing you don’t.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

The old man stepped backward.

“Time.””

A hidden door opened behind him.

He disappeared.

But before leaving, he said one final thing:

“Ask Sarah why she never told you about Clara’s role in all of this.””

I turned.

“Clara?””

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because Sarah looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.
