Chapter 8: The Warehouse of Lies

The abandoned warehouse stood near the water, surrounded by darkness.

Rain hit the pavement as Ricardo’s cars stopped outside.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone knew this was different.

This wasn’t business.

This was personal.

Ricardo stepped out first.

I followed.

“Stay behind me,” he said.

I ignored him.

He looked back.

“You never listen, do you?””

I shook my head.

“Sarah said the same thing about me.””

For the first time that night, a small smile almost appeared.

Almost.

Then the warehouse doors opened.

A voice echoed from inside.

“Come in.””

Marco.

Ricardo walked forward.

The guards followed.

I stayed close.

Inside, the warehouse smelled like rust and old gasoline.

A single light hung from the ceiling.

And beneath it sat Marco.

Calm.

Waiting.

Leo was beside him.

My heart jumped.

“Leo!””

The little boy looked up.

“Auntie Clara!””

He tried to run toward me.

Marco grabbed his shoulder.

Ricardo’s entire body changed.

“Take your hand off my son.””

Marco smiled.

“There he is.””

“What?””

“The man everyone fears.””

Marco looked around.

“But not the father.””

Ricardo took one step forward.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

“I knew you before Sarah did.””

The words stopped him.

Marco looked at Leo.

“I was there when you first held him.””

His expression softened.

“You cried.””

Ricardo’s face went still.

“You remember?””

“Of course I remember.””

Marco laughed quietly.

“You were so afraid.””

I looked at Ricardo.

This was not the powerful mafia boss.

This was a man remembering the day his world changed.

Marco continued.

“You promised Sarah you would protect them.””

Ricardo’s jaw tightened.

“And I did.””

“No.””

Marco shook his head.

“You protected the family name.””

A silence followed.

“You protected the business.””

Marco looked directly at him.

“But you never protected Sarah.””

I felt Ricardo flinch.

“Where is she?””

Marco smiled.

“Still asking the wrong question.””

“What question should I ask?””

Marco leaned forward.

“Ask why Sarah was willing to disappear.””

Ricardo stared.

Marco looked at me.

“Ask why she trusted Clara instead of you.””

My hands tightened.

“Stop using my sister.””

Marco looked at me.

“You think she was perfect?””

I said nothing.

“She lied to you too.””

The words hurt.

Because some part of me already knew.

Marco reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“Sarah left this for you.””

He threw it across the floor.

I picked it up.

Inside was a letter.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Clara,

If you’re reading this, I failed.

I couldn’t protect Leo.

I couldn’t protect Ricardo.

And I couldn’t protect you from the truth.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Ricardo watched me.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Marco did.

“She says Ricardo didn’t kill anyone.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Marco smiled.

“But he caused the explosion.””

The room went silent.

Ricardo looked at him.

“No.””

Marco nodded.

“You lost control that night.””

“I would never hurt Sarah.””

“Not intentionally.””

The words cut deeper.

I looked at Ricardo.

He looked like he was trying to remember something buried.

Something terrifying.

“I don’t remember.””

Marco laughed.

“Exactly.””

A loud noise came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Another car.

Then another.

Marco smiled.

“You took too long.””

Ricardo’s guards moved toward the entrance.

“What did you do?””

Marco stood.

“I called the people who actually know the truth.””

The warehouse doors opened.

A group of armed men entered.

But they weren’t strangers.

They wore Moretti family symbols.

Ricardo’s own men.

His face darkened.

“You’ve been building an army.””

Marco shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Leo.

“I’ve been preparing for the day everyone finds out what Ricardo Moretti really did.””

Leo started crying.

I moved toward him.

Marco let go.

That surprised everyone.

Leo ran into my arms.

And whispered something only I could hear.

“Auntie Clara…”

“What?””

“Mommy said if Daddy remembers…”

He looked terrified.

“She said everyone will die.””

My blood ran cold.

Because at that exact moment, Ricardo’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

Sarah.

“Ricardo.””

He froze.

“Sarah?””

Her voice trembled.

“I’m sorry.””

Then she whispered:

“Don’t let Clara open the second half of the necklace.””

I looked down.

At the pendant.

The key.

My stomach dropped.

May you like

Because the heart necklace had another hidden piece.

And it had started opening by itself.
