Chapter 9: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

Ryan didn’t speak.

He just stared at me.

At first, I thought he was shocked.

Then I realized something worse.

He was remembering.

“Ryan.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“Tell me she’s wrong.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was my answer.

My heart sank.

“You knew.””

“No.””

The word came too quickly.

Then he stopped.

“I mean…”

He looked away.

And that was worse.

Because lies had become easier for him than the truth.

“How much?””

His voice was barely audible.

“Jenna…”

“How much money did they give you?””

He sat down.

“I didn’t ask for it.””

I laughed.

“That’s not what I asked.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“Twenty thousand.””

The number felt unreal.

Twenty thousand dollars.

That was all it took.

My brother stayed silent while my parents tried to take my home.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“I was drowning.””

“And I wasn’t?””

He looked crushed.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t know what it feels like to spend years building something and then watch people decide they deserve it more.””

Ryan lowered his head.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

The apology hurt because I believed it.

And somehow that made everything harder.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Miranda.

*I need you to come to the office. Immediately.*

I showed Ryan.

“What now?””

“I don’t know.””

When we arrived, Miranda was standing by the conference table.

She had several files spread out.

“You found something else.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

She pushed one file toward me.

“This is the document David used to justify the transfer attempt.””

I opened it.

The page looked official.

Too official.

Then I saw the signature.

My name.

But not my signature.

“What am I missing?””

Miranda pointed to the bottom.

“The witness.””

I looked closer.

My eyes widened.

The witness wasn’t random.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been in my life for years.

Someone who had attended family events.

Someone who had watched me grow up.

I whispered:

“No.””

Ryan leaned closer.

“Who is it?””

I turned the paper around.

The name stared back at us.

*Kelsey Hart.*

Ryan stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Miranda shook her head.

“It’s not.””

I looked at her.

“She was part of it?””

“Not originally.””

“What does that mean?””

Miranda opened another file.

“This was sent to me anonymously this morning.””

Inside was a printed email.

From David.

To Kelsey.

My hands trembled as I read.

*If you want your family protected, you need to cooperate.*

I looked up.

“She was threatened.””

Miranda nodded.

“Looks like it.””

Ryan looked devastated.

“So she wasn’t helping them.””

“No,” Miranda said.

“She may have been trying to protect herself.””

I stared at the message.

The pieces were changing again.

Everyone I thought was against me had secrets.

Everyone I trusted had failed me.

Then Miranda pulled out one final document.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She placed a birth certificate on the table.

Not mine.

Not Ryan’s.

Someone else’s.

My eyes moved to the name.

And my entire world stopped.

Because the child listed on that certificate connected my family to David Collins in a way I never imagined.

Miranda whispered:

“Jenna… your parents weren’t just protecting Ryan.””

May you like

She pointed at the paper.

“They were protecting a secret that goes back twenty-seven years.””
