Chapter 7: The Plan They Never Wanted Me To See

My father stopped halfway up the driveway.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not him.

Not David.

Not me.

The only sound was the wind moving through the trees beside the house.

Then Dad looked at the envelope in my hand.

And I saw it.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Where did you get that?”” he asked.

I held the paper tighter.

“Interesting question.””

David stepped forward.

“Jenna, you don’t understand what you’re looking at.””

I laughed quietly.

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite sentence.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You need to give me that document.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

He stopped.

I think that surprised him.

Because my whole life, when my parents demanded something, I gave it.

My time.

My money.

My forgiveness.

But not anymore.

Kelsey stood behind me.

“I told you this was a bad idea.””

Dad looked at her.

“You need to stay out of this.””

She shook her head.

“I was already in it.””

Ryan’s voice suddenly came from behind my father.

“Dad?””

Everyone turned.

Ryan had arrived.

I hadn’t even heard his car.

His face changed when he saw David standing there.

“You knew?””

My father looked away.

That was enough.

Ryan stepped closer.

“You knew the whole time?””

“Ryan, listen—”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You told me Jenna was helping us.””

Dad sighed.

“I was trying to fix things.””

Ryan stared at him.

“By stealing from her?””

The word hung in the air.

Stealing.

Nobody corrected him.

Because it was true.

David crossed his arms.

“This emotional reaction isn’t helping anyone.””

I looked at him.

“You’re the one who created fake documents.””

His jaw tightened.

“I created a solution.””

“A solution where I lose my house.””

“A solution where your family survives.””

I stared at him.

There it was.

The thing they all believed.

That my success was a resource they could use.

That because I had worked harder, I somehow owed them.

I stepped closer.

“You all keep saying family.””

My voice shook.

“But none of you ever asked what happens to me.””

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

“When you transferred that money into my account, you weren’t helping me.””

His face changed.

“You knew about that?””

“Yes.””

David looked at my father.

“You said she wouldn’t find out.””

My stomach dropped.

I turned.

“What did you say?””

David realized his mistake too late.

My father immediately interrupted.

“David.””

But it was already done.

I heard every word.

“You said she wouldn’t find out.””

I repeated it slowly.

David looked uncomfortable.

“Jenna, this isn’t—”

“Don’t.””

I pointed at him.

“Don’t tell me I don’t understand.””

My father rubbed his forehead.

“Your mother and I were desperate.””

“Desperate enough to destroy me?””

“No.””

“Then explain the note.””

I held up the document.

“Proceed without Jenna.””

My father went silent.

Ryan looked at him.

“Dad?””

For the first time, my father looked old.

Not powerful.

Not in control.

Just tired.

“We thought you would refuse.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“You knew I would say no.””

“Yes.””

“Because you knew it was wrong.””

Silence.

My mother had arrived while we were talking.

She stood near the front door, crying.

“Jenna…”

I turned toward her.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

She covered her mouth.

“We were trying to save Ryan.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at all of them.

“You were trying to save yourselves.””

The next morning, Miranda filed the emergency paperwork.

The house was officially protected from any transfer attempt.

But there was one thing I couldn’t stop thinking about.

David’s mistake.

The way he had looked when he realized he revealed something.

He wasn’t scared because I had the document.

He was scared because there was something worse.

Something even he didn’t want me to know.

That afternoon, Miranda called.

“Jenna, I found another file.””

My stomach tightened.

“Another one?””

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

A pause.

Then she said:

“It’s a recording.””

I sat up.

“Of what?””

“The meeting where they created the plan.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who recorded it?””

Miranda was quiet.

May you like

Then:

“Your brother.””
