Chapter 11: The House With A Hidden Past

I couldn’t speak.

The house.

My dream home.

The place I spent years saving for.

The place my family tried to steal.

It wasn’t random.

That was the part that terrified me.

“Explain.””

My mother sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

“That’s becoming a pattern.””

She looked away.

“I know.””

Ryan stood near the window.

“Who owned the house before Jenna?””

My mother answered quietly.

“Your grandfather.””

I looked at her.

“My grandfather?””

She nodded.

“Your mother’s father.””

The words felt strange.

I had barely known anything about him.

He died when I was young.

The family never talked about him.

I always assumed it was because grief was painful.

Now I wondered if it was because the truth was inconvenient.

“Why did nobody tell me?””

My mother looked ashamed.

“Because David didn’t want you to know.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because your grandfather left something behind.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked at Ryan.

Then at me.

“A legal trust.””

Miranda immediately focused.

“A trust?””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

“And who controlled it?””

My mother swallowed.

“David.””

Everything clicked.

The house.

The documents.

The fake transfer.

The obsession.

“He wasn’t trying to help Ryan.””

My voice became quiet.

“He was trying to get access to something.””

My mother looked down.

“Yes.””

Ryan turned around.

“Why didn’t you stop him?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of David?””

She nodded.

“He knew things about me.””

I stared.

“Your affair?””

She looked shocked that I knew.

But then she nodded.

“Yes.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked at Ryan.

He looked devastated.

“My whole life…”

His voice broke.

“My whole life was built on lies.””

I wanted to comfort him.

But I couldn’t.

Not yet.

Too much had happened.

My mother reached into a drawer.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“I kept this.””

She handed it to me.

“What is it?””

“Something your grandfather wrote.””

I opened it carefully.

The paper was old.

The handwriting shaky.

The first line made my heart stop.

*To my granddaughter Jenna.*

I looked up.

“How did he know about me?””

My mother whispered:

“He knew you were coming before you were born.””

I kept reading.

The letter was short.

But the message was clear.

He wanted the property protected.

He wanted it passed down.

And he warned about one person.

David.

The final sentence made my hands shake.

*If David ever tries to claim what belongs to Jenna, it means he has finally revealed his true intentions.*

I looked at Miranda.

“This was planned before I was even old enough to understand.””

Miranda nodded.

“Yes.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A familiar voice.

David.

“You found the letter.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

He laughed quietly.

“Because I knew where your mother kept it.””

My heart raced.

“You’ve been watching us.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“I’ve been protecting what should have been mine.””

“Your?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“You don’t own my grandfather’s property.””

“You don’t understand the history.””

“I understand enough.””

He sighed.

“Jenna, your grandfather made a promise.””

“What promise?””

“That the property would go to his bloodline.””

I frowned.

“My bloodline.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

“Ryan’s.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?””

David continued:

“Ask your mother who your grandfather really considered his heir.””

The call ended.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

May you like

Because she knew.

And whatever truth was coming next was something she had spent decades hiding.
