Chapter 6: The Secret Kelsey Kept

I didn’t speak.

Neither did Kelsey.

The silence between us felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

Finally, I asked:

“When did you know?””

Her voice shook.

“Before we moved in.””

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to be surprised.

But somehow, I wasn’t.

“Tell me the truth.””

“I’m trying.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You’re trying because you got caught.””

A quiet sob came through the phone.

“You’re right.””

That answer stopped me.

I expected excuses.

Blame.

Denial.

Not honesty.

“What happened?””

Kelsey took a deep breath.

“Ryan came home one night and told me your parents had found a way for us to stop struggling.””

I sat down.

“And?””

“He said they had talked to your father’s friend.””

“David.””

“Yes.””

I gripped the phone.

“What did they tell you?””

“That your parents owned part of the house.””

I looked toward the empty living room.

“And you believed them?””

“I wanted to.””

The honesty hurt.

“I wanted to believe something good was finally happening for us.””

I said nothing.

Kelsey continued.

“But then I saw the documents.””

“What documents?””

“The ones in your kitchen drawer.””

I froze.

“The property folder?””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“You opened them before today?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because something felt wrong.””

I stood.

“You knew my name was on the deed.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you move in?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because Ryan told me your parents had already convinced you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“They never talked to me.””

“I know that now.””

“Now?””

She went quiet.

Then she said:

“Jenna, there’s something else.””

I waited.

“I found out Ryan knew more than he admitted.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“He wasn’t just told you were giving us the house.””

A pause.

“He saw the documents.””

I looked around the room.

The walls felt like they were closing in.

“Which documents?””

“The fake ones.””

I didn’t answer.

Kelsey whispered:

“I thought he would tell me the truth.””

I sat back down.

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Losing everything.””

There it was.

The same fear that had driven everyone else.

Money.

Security.

Comfort.

And somehow, I was the only person who had paid the price.

I heard movement outside.

A car door closing.

“Kelsey.””

“What?””

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then:

“At your house.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“I came to return something.””

I walked to the window.

A black car sat in my driveway.

Kelsey stood beside it.

I opened the front door.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

No designer clothes.

No confidence.

Just guilt.

She handed me a small envelope.

“What is this?””

“The copy I made.””

I looked at her.

“Of what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The original agreement.””

I froze.

“Original?””

“Yes.””

I opened it.

One page.

One signature.

One line that changed everything.

Because at the bottom was David Collins’ name.

But underneath it was another signature.

A signature I recognized.

My mother’s.

And next to it was a handwritten note.

Three words.

*Proceed without Jenna.*

I looked up.

“Kelsey…”

She shook her head.

“I didn’t write that.””

My fingers trembled.

“Then who did?””

Before she could answer, headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.

A car stopped.

The driver’s door opened.

My father stepped out.

And behind him was David Collins.

My father looked at the paper in my hand.

Then his face changed.

Because he knew.

He knew I had finally found the one thing they were trying to hide.

The proof that this was never about helping Ryan.

It was about removing me completely.
