Chapter 7: The Man Who Buried the Truth

The porch light flickered above him.

For a moment, nobody moved.

My father-in-law stood outside my house wearing the same expression he had worn at Daniel’s funeral.

The expression of a grieving father.

The expression of a broken grandfather.

The expression of a man everyone trusted.

But now I saw something else.

Calculation.

“Emma,” he called through the door.

“Open up.””

Noah’s fingers wrapped around my hand.

“Grandpa?””

My son’s voice cracked.

That was the worst part.

Because Noah didn’t see a threat.

He saw family.

I looked at Hammer.

He shook his head slowly.

Don’t.

Don’t open the door.

My father-in-law, Robert Carter, knocked again.

“Emma, I know you’re inside.””

Michael stood against the wall, still bleeding from his forehead.

“He can’t know I’m here.””

I whispered, “Why?””

Michael looked at Robert through the window.

“Because if he knows I survived, he’ll know I told you.””

The pounding became louder.

“Emma!””

Robert’s voice changed.

The warmth disappeared.

“Please don’t make this harder than it needs to be.””

My stomach twisted.

Harder?

What did that mean?

Hammer stepped closer to the door.

“Everyone upstairs.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Emma.””

“I spent eleven months believing my husband died because of an accident.””

My voice trembled.

“I’m done hiding.””

I walked toward the door.

Hammer grabbed my arm.

“Daniel asked me to protect you.””

I looked at him.

“Then help me face him.””

For several seconds, Hammer said nothing.

Then he released my arm.

I unlocked the door.

But I didn’t open it fully.

Robert smiled when he saw me.

“There you are.””

His eyes moved behind me.

Then stopped.

On Hammer.

The smile vanished.

“You.””

Hammer stepped forward.

“Robert.””

The way he said his name made my skin crawl.

Not anger.

Disgust.

Robert looked at Michael.

Then at the blood on his shirt.

And finally at the notebook in my hand.

“You found the garage.””

It wasn’t a question.

My heart sank.

“You knew.””

Robert sighed.

“Emma, Daniel was sick.””

I felt rage rise in my chest.

“Stop saying that.””

His expression hardened.

“What?””

“Stop using his illness like it explains everything.””

I stepped outside.

“My husband spent his final months trying to protect people.””

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“He was obsessed.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He was afraid.””

The silence that followed was enough.

Robert looked away.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Guilt.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Robert looked back.

“You don’t understand what Daniel got involved in.””

“Then explain.””

He said nothing.

“Explain why he hid evidence.””

Silence.

“Explain why he wrote that someone close to him couldn’t be trusted.””

Robert’s face changed.

“Daniel wrote that?””

Hammer stepped beside me.

“He did.””

Robert looked at him with hatred.

“You always thought you were his protector.””

Hammer’s voice was cold.

“I was.””

“No.””

Robert laughed quietly.

“You were his distraction.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Robert looked at Noah.

And his expression softened.

That scared me more.

“Come here, buddy.””

Noah stepped back.

“No.””

Robert looked hurt.

The performance was almost perfect.

Almost.

“My grandson is afraid of me now?””

Noah held tighter to my hand.

“He wrote my name on a key.””

Robert froze.

“What key?””

The question came too quickly.

I noticed.

Hammer noticed.

Michael noticed.

Everyone noticed.

I slowly lifted the brass key.

“This one.””

Robert’s face lost color.

For the first time, he looked truly afraid.

“What did Daniel tell you?””

I stared at him.

“You tell me.””

Robert took a step back.

“No.””

The word was barely audible.

“No, he couldn’t have.””

“Couldn’t have what?””

He looked at Noah.

Then at the key.

Then at me.

“Daniel promised he would never show you.””

My blood went cold.

“Show me what?””

Robert didn’t answer.

He turned away.

That was when Hammer grabbed his shoulder.

“Not this time.””

Robert pulled free.

“You have no idea what Daniel was protecting you from.””

I stepped forward.

“Then why does everyone keep saying that?””

Robert looked at me.

Because for the first time, he wasn’t pretending.

He looked terrified.

“Because Daniel wasn’t investigating a crime.””

He swallowed.

“He was investigating me.””

The words landed like a punch.

Noah gasped.

“Grandpa?””

Robert closed his eyes.

And then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

DON’T LISTEN TO ROBERT.

A second message arrived immediately.

BECAUSE HE IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LIED TO YOU.

Attached was a photograph.

A photograph taken inside my house.

A photograph of Noah sleeping.

My hands went numb.

The picture was recent.

May you like

Taken tonight.

And someone had been inside.
