Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Nobody spoke.
The sentence remained on the screen.
The person who took Noah is his mother.
My hands went numb.
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Hammer stared at the screen.
“Daniel wouldn’t write something like this without a reason.””
I turned toward him.
“You think I took my own son?””
“No.””
“Then what does this mean?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Except Daniel.
And he was gone.
I grabbed the laptop.
“There has to be more.””
Michael searched the files.
“There’s another video.””
He opened it.
Daniel appeared again.
This time, his expression was different.
Serious.
Afraid.
“Emma, if you’re seeing this part, then you know the message was designed to confuse anyone who found it.””
I exhaled.
A small piece of hope returned.
Daniel continued.
“The person who took Noah is his mother.””
He paused.
Then smiled slightly.
“Not you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked directly at the camera.
“Emma, you need to know something about the woman who gave birth to Noah.””
The room went silent.
Michael looked confused.
Hammer looked shocked.
I whispered:
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel continued.
“You told me you wanted to know the truth about Noah’s birth.””
I felt dizzy.
Because I had.
Years ago.
Before Noah was born.
The doctors told us there were complications.
There were things we never discussed.
Things Daniel always said were private.
“No,” I whispered.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“You were told Noah was born through a normal process.””
The video paused.
“But that wasn’t the whole story.””
I stared at the screen.
“No.””
Hammer looked at me.
“Emma?””
I backed away.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel continued.
“The hospital made mistakes.””
My chest tightened.
“Your son’s records were changed.””
Michael immediately stood.
“What?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Robert wasn’t just changing billing information.””
The screen flickered.
“He was changing identities.””
The room became silent.
I couldn’t hear anything.
Not the clock.
Not the rain outside.
Nothing.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
“What are you saying?””
The video continued.
“Noah was born from a situation I never wanted you to carry.””
A pause.
“But he is our son.””
Tears filled my eyes.
Of course he was.
Nothing could change that.
Daniel looked directly at me.
“You are Noah’s mother because you loved him before you ever held him.””
I covered my face.
Michael looked devastated.
“I didn’t know.””
Hammer looked at him.
“You didn’t know?””
Michael shook his head.
“Daniel kept this from everyone.””
The video continued.
“Robert discovered the truth about Noah.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“And he tried to use it.””
I looked at Hammer.
“What truth?””
Before he could answer, the laptop screen went black.
The battery died.
Everyone froze.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
A child’s voice came through.
“Mom?””
My knees nearly collapsed.
“Noah!””
I held the phone tightly.
“Where are you?””
Silence.
Then Noah whispered:
“I’m with someone.””
“Who?””
Another voice came through.
A woman.
Calm.
Gentle.
“I’m sorry, Emma.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from the past.
Not from Daniel’s stories.
From somewhere much closer.
The woman spoke again.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
My hand shook.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m Noah’s biological mother.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Michael whispered:
“Who was it?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I knew.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it once before.
At the hospital.
The day Noah was born.
A nurse had leaned over my bed and said:
“Congratulations, Mrs. Carter.””
But before she left, she whispered something strange.
Something I never understood.
“Some mothers have to give up what they love to save it.””
I had forgotten that moment.
Until now.
Hammer stepped closer.
“Emma.””
I looked up.
“My son’s mother is alive.””
May you like
And somewhere out there…
She had Noah.
