Chapter 5: What Daniel Hid Inside the Harley

I spent the next hour staring at the Harley.

The same motorcycle my son had drawn without ever seeing it.

The same motorcycle Daniel had loved.

The same motorcycle that apparently held a secret worth killing for.

“Open it,” I said.

Hammer looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I swallowed.

“But I need to know.””

He nodded.

Slowly, he unlocked a compartment beneath the seat.

Inside was nothing but an old rag.

For a moment, I thought we were wrong.

Then Hammer pressed his fingers against the bottom panel.

A small click echoed.

A hidden compartment opened.

Noah gasped.

“Whoa.””

Inside was a small metal box.

No bigger than a book.

My hands shook when Hammer handed it to me.

There was no lock.

Only a note.

Emma,

If you found this, it means I couldn’t finish what I started.

I closed my eyes.

Daniel.

Even now, he was still speaking to me.

I opened the box.

Inside were three things.

A flash drive.

A key card.

And a small envelope with Noah’s name written on it.

My son reached for it.

“Is that mine?””

I nodded.

He carefully opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Noah,

When you read this, I want you to know something.

Your dad was never afraid of dying.

He was afraid of leaving you.

Noah’s face changed.

He couldn’t read the rest.

I took the letter gently.

Hammer looked away.

He had seen enough pain.

I continued.

I hope you always remember that being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t scared.

It means you do what’s right anyway.

And your mom is the bravest person I know.

My throat tightened.

Daniel had written those words before he died.

He knew.

He knew he wouldn’t be there to say them.

I looked at Noah.

He wiped his eyes quickly.

“My dad wrote that?””

“Yes.””

“He knew he was going away?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Hammer did.

“Yeah, buddy.””

Noah looked at him.

“Was he scared?””

Hammer nodded.

“More than I’d ever seen.””

“Then why did he do it?””

Hammer looked at the motorcycle.

“Because someone had to.””

The next morning, Hammer and I watched the flash drive on my laptop.

There were dozens of files.

Documents.

Photos.

Videos.

Daniel had spent months collecting evidence.

The first video was recorded in a parking garage.

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.””

The camera shook.

He looked tired.

But determined.

“I found out someone inside the hospital system has been changing records.””

I leaned closer.

Michael’s name appeared on a document behind him.

My stomach twisted.

“No…”

Hammer watched my face.

“You didn’t know?””

I shook my head.

“Michael worked with Daniel. They had a company together.””

Hammer nodded.

“That’s what made it easier.””

“Easier for what?””

He didn’t answer.

The video continued.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“Emma, I need you to understand something.””

I held my breath.

“This isn’t about money.””

The screen flickered.

“It’s about Noah.””

A chill moved through me.

Daniel continued.

“When I discovered what they were doing, I realized they weren’t just hiding stolen money.””

He paused.

“They were hiding names.””

The video ended.

A folder opened automatically.

Inside was a list.

Hundreds of names.

Patients.

Families.

People who had lost someone.

At the bottom was a final file.

Created two days before Daniel’s death.

The title was simple.

NOAH’S PROTECTION.

I clicked it.

A video loaded.

Daniel appeared on the screen again.

But this time, he wasn’t in the garage.

He was sitting on the Harley.

The exact pose Noah had drawn.

His face looked exhausted.

“Emma,” he said.

“If you’re seeing this, then Michael knows.””

My blood ran cold.

Hammer leaned closer.

Daniel continued.

“I need you to do one thing.””

He looked straight into the camera.

“Do not trust anyone who tells you I died because of an accident.””

The video paused.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Because the person responsible is closer to you than you think.””

The screen went black.

At that exact moment, my phone rang.

I looked down.

The caller ID appeared.

My hands went cold.

It was Michael.

I answered.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Michael whispered:

“Emma… you need to get Noah out of town.””

I stood frozen.

“Why?””

His breathing shook.

“Because they know you found the box.””

A crash sounded on his end.

May you like

Then he said the words that made my blood turn cold.

“And they’re already coming for your son.””
