Chapter 14: The Person Daniel Missed
The sound of the gunshot stayed in my head.
Everything after that happened too quickly.
Hammer ran toward Michael.
Claire pulled Noah away from the window.
I stood frozen.
Because the person holding the gun wasn’t Robert.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t someone from Daniel’s investigation.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had cried beside me at Daniel’s funeral.
My own sister.
Rachel.
“Rachel?””
The name came out like a question.
She stepped into the farmhouse slowly.
Her face was wet with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
She lowered the gun.
“I never wanted it to happen this way.””
“What did you do?””
She looked at Noah.
Then at me.
“I protected you.””
The words almost made me laugh.
Everyone said that.
Everyone destroyed my life while claiming they were protecting me.
“You took my son?””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I saved him from Robert.””
I looked at Claire.
Then at Robert.
Then back at Rachel.
“Explain.””
Rachel looked exhausted.
Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
“Daniel found out everything.””
She swallowed.
“He found out about Noah.””
I held my son closer.
“He found out Claire was his biological mother.””
Rachel nodded.
“And he found out Robert had covered it up.””
Robert looked furious.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Rachel ignored him.
“But Daniel also found something else.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“You.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
Rachel nodded.
“Daniel discovered your medical records were altered too.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Noah.
“Your pregnancy wasn’t an accident.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Robert wanted control over everything. He manipulated records. He made sure Noah stayed connected to people he could use.””
Claire whispered:
“He wanted a perfect family for his image.””
Rachel nodded.
“And when Daniel found out, he decided to expose him.””
I looked at Robert.
“But Daniel died.””
Rachel looked down.
“I know.””
A terrible silence.
Then she whispered:
“Because I was there.””
My body went cold.
“You?””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I followed Daniel that night.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew he was going after Robert.””
She looked at me.
“I wanted to stop him.””
“Stop him from exposing him?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“Stop him from getting himself killed.””
The room became silent.
“What happened?””
Rachel looked toward the floor.
“When I arrived, Daniel was already hurt.””
A tear fell.
“Robert was there.””
Robert shouted:
“She’s lying!””
Rachel looked at him.
“You told me I had no choice.””
My heart pounded.
“You knew?””
Rachel nodded.
“I knew.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her face collapsed.
“Because I was scared.””
That answer hurt.
Because I understood fear.
But I couldn’t forgive what fear had cost me.
“You let me bury him.””
Rachel cried.
“I know.””
“You let me believe it was an accident.””
“I know.””
“You watched me raise Noah alone.””
“I know!””
Her voice cracked.
Then she looked at me.
“And I hated myself every day.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Hammer returned.
Michael was alive.
Barely.
But alive.
He looked at Rachel.
“You finally told her.””
Rachel nodded.
Michael looked at me.
“There’s one more thing.””
I almost couldn’t take another truth.
“What now?””
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small recorder.
“Daniel left this with me.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because he knew I might fail him.””
Michael pressed play.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, then Michael finally made the right choice.””
Michael closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“Emma, I need you to know something.””
A pause.
“The person who betrayed me wasn’t the person who hurt me.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel’s voice softened.
“The person who hurt me was trying to hide my evidence.””
A pause.
“But the person who betrayed me…”
The recording crackled.
“…was someone I loved.””
Everyone froze.
Then Daniel said the final words.
“And Emma, I’m sorry.””
The recording ended.
I looked around the room.
At Robert.
At Rachel.
At Michael.
At Claire.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
But only one person had something to lose.
Robert.
And he suddenly reached for something inside his jacket.
Hammer shouted:
“Robert!””
Too late.
Robert pulled out a second flash drive.
May you like
And smiled.
“Your husband wasn’t the only one who prepared for this.””
