Chapter 10: The Truth Daniel Never Told Me
For five seconds after the call ended, I couldn’t breathe.
The phone remained pressed against my ear.
The room remained silent.
But everything inside me was screaming.
“He has Noah.””
My voice barely came out.
Hammer immediately reached for his jacket.
Michael stood.
“Where?””
I showed them the note.
The phone number.
The message.
Michael’s face changed when he saw it.
“No.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“This isn’t Robert.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“That number is fake.””
Hammer took the phone from him.
Michael pointed at the screen.
“Robert would never use a number that can be traced.””
“You’re saying someone is pretending to be him?””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Someone had taken Noah.
Someone wanted me to think it was Robert.
But why?
Hammer looked toward the door.
“Because they want us looking in the wrong direction.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“We don’t have time for guessing.””
I held up the note.
“My son is gone.””
Hammer looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For Noah.
“We’ll find him.””
Those four words were the only thing keeping me standing.
Michael opened his laptop.
“There’s one thing Daniel never told you.””
I looked at him.
“I’m starting to think there are a lot of things Daniel never told me.””
Michael accepted that.
“You’re right.””
He typed quickly.
“When Daniel discovered what Robert was doing, he didn’t just collect evidence.””
“What else did he do?””
“He created a backup.””
Hammer frowned.
“Where?””
Michael looked at me.
“With the one person he knew nobody would suspect.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Michael turned the laptop around.
A file appeared.
The name was:
EMMA_CARTER_FINAL.
I stared.
“What is that?””
Michael swallowed.
“Daniel’s final message to you.””
I couldn’t move.
“Why didn’t I know about this?””
“Because it wasn’t meant to be opened unless Noah disappeared.””
The room went cold.
Hammer looked at Michael.
“You knew about this?””
“I knew it existed.””
“You didn’t tell her?””
“I didn’t know if it was safe.””
Anger flashed through me.
“Safe?””
I stepped closer.
“My child is missing.””
Michael lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice broke.
“You don’t know what it feels like to wake up every morning and realize the person you built your life with is gone.””
Michael didn’t argue.
He just whispered:
“I know what it feels like to fail him.””
That stopped me.
Because he looked like someone carrying a punishment he had already given himself.
I turned back to the screen.
“Open it.””
Michael hesitated.
“Emma.””
“Open it.””
The video loaded.
For several seconds, there was only darkness.
Then Daniel appeared.
My heart shattered.
Because he looked alive.
Tired.
Pale.
But alive.
“Emma.””
I covered my mouth.
His voice.
After all this time.
“By now, you’re probably angry with me.””
A small smile crossed his face.
“You should be.””
I cried silently.
Daniel continued.
“I wanted to tell you everything.””
He looked down.
“But every time I tried, I thought about Noah.””
The screen flickered.
“I realized something.””
He looked directly at the camera.
“You would risk everything for him.””
I whispered:
“Of course I would.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“That’s why I loved you.””
The video continued.
“Emma, if Noah is missing, it means the person I feared finally made a move.””
I held my breath.
“But there’s something you need to understand.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“I didn’t hide Noah because I didn’t trust you.””
A tear moved down his face.
“I hid him because I trusted you too much.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“You have always believed the best in people.””
His voice became softer.
“That is your greatest strength.””
A pause.
“And your greatest danger.””
The video stopped.
A password screen appeared.
Michael frowned.
“There’s another layer.””
Hammer looked at him.
“What does it need?””
Michael stared.
“An answer.””
A security question appeared.
THE FIRST PLACE DANIEL SAW EMMA.
I froze.
Because I knew.
The answer wasn’t complicated.
It was a tiny coffee shop downtown.
Where Daniel spilled coffee all over my coat.
Where he apologized for ten minutes.
Where I laughed so hard I forgot to be annoyed.
I typed the answer.
Wrong.
I tried again.
Wrong.
My heart sank.
“That’s not it.””
Hammer looked at me.
“Think.””
I closed my eyes.
Not where he saw me.
Where he met me.
The first place our lives crossed.
A memory appeared.
A rainy bus stop.
A stranger holding an umbrella.
A man who smiled and said:
“You look like you’re having the worst day of your life.””
I typed:
BUS STOP.
The file opened.
Inside was one sentence.
IF YOU FOUND THIS, EMMA, IT MEANS YOU FINALLY REMEMBERED.
Then a map appeared.
A location.
My hands went cold.
Because I knew that place.
Daniel had taken me there once.
Years ago.
Before Noah was born.
The abandoned farmhouse outside town.
The place Daniel always called:
“The beginning.””
Then another message appeared.
FROM DANIEL:
DON’T TRUST THE PERSON WHO TOOK NOAH.
THEY THINK THEY ARE SAVING HIM.
I stared at the screen.
Saving him?
Not hurting him.
Saving him.
Then the final line appeared.
THE PERSON WHO TOOK OUR SON IS NOT ROBERT.
I stopped breathing.
May you like
The last sentence appeared slowly.
THE PERSON WHO TOOK NOAH IS HIS MOTHER.
