Chapter 13: The Last Lie
I stared at Michael.
For a moment, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Robert stood in the doorway.
The man Daniel feared.
The man who had lied to me.
But beside him was Michael.
The man who had apologized.
The man who had helped us.
The man who had looked broken every time Daniel’s name was mentioned.
“No,” I whispered.
Michael couldn’t look at me.
That hurt more than anger would have.
Because anger meant he was fighting.
Guilt meant he knew exactly what he had done.
Hammer stepped between us.
“I knew there was something wrong with you.””
Michael’s face tightened.
“You always did.””
“No.””
Hammer’s voice was low.
“I wanted to believe Daniel was wrong.””
Michael looked away.
Robert smiled.
“That was always Daniel’s problem.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
“He believed people could change.””
Robert stepped into the farmhouse.
“He believed loyalty mattered.””
His eyes moved toward Noah.
“He believed love made people honest.””
Noah grabbed my hand.
I pulled him behind me.
Robert noticed.
And smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
I felt anger rise.
“Understand what?””
He lifted the flash drive.
“This.””
Daniel’s evidence.
The thing he died protecting.
“You think this destroys me.””
He laughed quietly.
“It doesn’t.””
Michael looked at him.
“Robert.””
The warning in his voice surprised me.
Robert ignored him.
“You were always weak, Michael.””
Michael’s expression changed.
“I did what I had to do.””
“No.””
Robert stepped closer.
“You did what you were told.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
I looked at Michael.
“What did he mean?””
Michael didn’t answer.
So I asked again.
“What did he mean?””
Finally, Michael whispered:
“I wasn’t Daniel’s partner.””
The room went silent.
“I worked for Robert.””
My heart sank.
“For how long?””
Michael closed his eyes.
“From the beginning.””
Noah looked confused.
“Uncle Michael?””
Michael flinched.
“Don’t call me that.””
The pain in his voice almost sounded genuine.
Almost.
Hammer stepped forward.
“You used Daniel.””
Michael looked at him.
“I was supposed to watch him.””
“Watch him?””
“I was supposed to make sure he didn’t discover too much.””
I felt sick.
“And then?””
Michael looked at Daniel’s letter in my hand.
“And then he became my friend.””
The room went quiet.
“Daniel believed in me.””
Michael’s voice cracked.
“He gave me a chance to be someone better.””
I shook my head.
“And you still betrayed him.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty made it worse.
Robert looked annoyed.
“You’re wasting time.””
Hammer turned.
“What are you afraid of?””
Robert smiled.
“I’m not afraid.””
But his hands were shaking.
I noticed.
Everyone noticed.
Claire stepped forward.
“You killed him.””
Robert looked at her.
“You should have stayed gone.””
My stomach turned.
“You knew her?””
Robert’s eyes moved between us.
“Of course I knew her.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“He was the one who took Noah from me.””
I froze.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“When I tried to get my son back, Robert threatened me.””
Robert laughed.
“You had no claim.””
“He was my baby.””
“And you were seventeen.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“You made me sign those papers.””
Robert shrugged.
“I protected the child.””
“No.””
Claire’s voice became stronger.
“You protected your business.””
Robert’s smile disappeared.
That was the first time I saw him lose control.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Then Noah spoke.
“Grandpa?””
Everyone turned.
My son looked at Robert.
“Did you hurt my dad?””
The question destroyed something in the room.
Because Robert had no answer.
For once.
No excuse.
No performance.
Just silence.
Hammer moved toward him.
But Robert suddenly threw the flash drive toward Michael.
“Go.””
Michael caught it.
And ran.
The entire room exploded into motion.
Hammer chased him.
I stayed with Noah.
But before Michael disappeared through the trees, he stopped.
He looked back at me.
And he said:
“Emma, there’s one thing Daniel never knew.””
I froze.
“What?””
Michael’s face was full of regret.
“Robert wasn’t the person who attacked him.””
My blood went cold.
“Then who was?””
Michael looked terrified.
“He never found out.””
A gunshot echoed through the woods.
Michael fell.
And the person standing behind him stepped into view.
May you like
The person who had been hiding in the shadows.
The person Daniel never discovered.
