Chapter 9: The Choice I Was Never Given
Nobody spoke.
The silence after my words felt heavier than the fear before them.
Elias stared at me.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.””
I looked down at the hospital document in my hand.
The signature.
My handwriting.
My decision.
“I signed this.””
Dr. Carter looked away.
I turned toward him.
“Tell me.””
He stayed silent.
“Tell me the truth.””
His shoulders lowered.
“The original Ryan requested the procedure.””
The stranger looked shocked.
“What?””
Dr. Carter nodded.
“You were dying.””
He looked at me.
“Your brain damage was severe. Your chances of recovery were almost zero.””
I felt dizzy.
“So I chose this?””
“Yes.””
Emma covered her mouth.
“I thought…”
She couldn’t finish.
“You thought what?””
She looked at me with tears.
“I thought I lost you.””
The words hurt.
Because suddenly I understood.
Everyone had been grieving someone.
While I had been living a life that wasn’t supposed to exist.
The stranger stepped closer.
“Why didn’t I remember?””
Dr. Carter answered:
“Because the procedure required separation.””
“Separation?””
“Your memories were copied. Your consciousness was transferred into a new biological system.””
The stranger stared.
“You mean…”
Dr. Carter nodded.
“You and him are both Ryan.””
My mind went completely still.
Not a copy.
Not fake.
Not replacement.
Both.
Two lives.
One beginning.
Elias looked angry.
“That was never the plan.””
Everyone turned.
I looked at him.
“What wasn’t?””
He stepped forward.
“The plan was for only one Ryan to survive.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“You wanted to erase him.””
“Yes.””
The stranger clenched his fists.
“Why?””
“Because two versions create risk.””
I almost laughed.
Risk.
That was how he described people.
Elias continued:
“The world cannot accept two identical men with the same memories.””
I looked at Ava.
“And what about her?””
Elias didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I understood.
He wasn’t protecting anyone.
He was protecting the secret.
The house suddenly shook.
A window cracked.
Daniel looked outside.
“We need to leave.””
Nobody moved.
I looked at the two men who shared my face.
Then at Emma.
Then Ava.
For years, I had wondered why pieces of my life felt missing.
Why memories felt like dreams.
Why I sometimes felt like a stranger inside my own home.
Now I knew.
Because I was carrying someone else’s beginning.
But my choices…
Those were mine.
I knelt beside Ava.
“Hey.””
She looked at me.
“Am I still your daddy?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You’re my daddy.””
I smiled sadly.
“Even if I’m different?””
She nodded.
“You came back.””
Those words broke me.
Behind her, the other Ryan looked away.
I realized something.
He had lost eight years.
I had lived eight years.
But we had both lost something.
A childhood with Ava.
A normal life.
A chance to choose.
I stood.
“Elias.””
He looked at me.
“This ends tonight.””
He smiled.
“You think you can stop me?””
“No.””
I looked at Ryan.
The original.
Then at Daniel.
Then Dr. Carter.
“I think we can.””
For the first time, the two of us stood together.
Not as enemies.
Not as copies.
As two people who had been manipulated.
Elias stepped backward.
“You don’t understand what happens if the truth gets out.””
I walked closer.
“Then let it.””
His expression changed.
“You’ll lose everything.””
I looked at Emma.
At Lily.
At Ava.
“My life was built on secrets.””
I shook my head.
“I’d rather rebuild it with the truth.””
Then Elias pulled something from his pocket.
A small remote.
Everyone froze.
The original Ryan whispered:
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face turned pale.
“That’s the shutdown device.””
My heart stopped.
“Shutdown?””
He looked at me.
“For the copies.””
Elias smiled.
“I was hoping you’d never find out.””
He pressed the button.
A sharp pain ripped through my body.
I collapsed.
The room spun.
Voices became distant.
Ryan grabbed my hand.
Emma screamed my name.
And the last thing I heard before darkness took me…
May you like
was Ava crying:
“Daddy, please don’t disappear again.””
