Chapter 2: The Secret Emma Buried
The stranger stepped into the bedroom light.
I expected a monster.
A criminal.
Someone who could explain the impossible.
Instead, I saw an older man with tired eyes and a face full of scars.
He held the photograph tightly.
“You finally found her,” he said.
My hands curled into fists.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at Emma.
Not me.
Emma.
And the fear on my wife’s face told me everything.
“Ryan,” she whispered.
I turned toward her.
“What is happening?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The little girl pressed herself against my side.
The stranger lowered the photograph.
“My name is Daniel.””
He looked at the child.
“She’s Ava.””
Ava.
The name hit me strangely.
Like a memory I had forgotten.
“No,” Emma said.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You can’t keep hiding forever.””
I stepped between them.
“Someone better start explaining right now.””
My voice echoed through the room.
Lily was crying quietly behind me.
I picked her up with one arm while keeping my other hand near Ava.
Emma looked broken.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?”” I asked.
“After all these years?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Ryan…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You knew about this child.””
The silence was my answer.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
Ava stared at Emma.
“Why did you leave me?””
Emma covered her mouth.
The words hit harder than anything else.
Leave me.
Not abandon.
Not lose.
Leave.
I looked at my wife.
“What does she mean?””
Emma sank onto the edge of the bed.
“I was eighteen.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Her hands trembled.
“Before I met you, before this house, before Lily…”
She looked at Ava.
“I had a daughter.””
The room became completely silent.
I heard Lily’s small breaths.
The ticking clock.
My own heartbeat.
“You had a daughter?”” I repeated.
Emma nodded, tears falling.
“I thought she was gone.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“She wasn’t gone.””
He held up the photograph.
“She was taken.””
My eyes moved to him.
“Taken by who?””
Daniel looked toward the hidden passage.
“I found her years ago.””
Ava grabbed my shirt.
“Daddy, don’t let him take me again.””
My stomach twisted.
I looked down at her.
The child I had met minutes ago.
The child who somehow shared my blood.
My face.
My mark.
“How is she my daughter?”” I asked.
Emma closed her eyes.
And that was when I saw something worse than fear.
Guilt.
“Because she was born before the accident.””
I froze.
“What accident?””
Emma looked at me.
“Ryan…”
Her voice cracked.
“The night you lost your memory.””
I stopped breathing.
Everyone knew I had been in a car accident eight years ago.
A serious crash.
Doctors said I was lucky to survive.
They told me the memory gaps were normal.
But nobody ever told me there was something missing.
Something important.
Emma whispered:
“You weren’t supposed to remember Ava.””
The words felt like a knife.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because you weren’t her father.””
Ava’s face changed.
She looked confused.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Then Emma said the sentence that destroyed everything.
“Not originally.””
Before I could ask what that meant, Daniel moved closer.
“The accident wasn’t an accident.””
My head snapped toward him.
“What?””
He reached into his coat and pulled out another photograph.
This one was newer.
Taken inside my house.
My house.
My bedroom.
The date was printed in the corner.
Three years earlier.
Someone had been watching us.
Daniel handed it to me.
“Your wife didn’t hide Ava because she wanted to hurt you.””
He looked at Emma.
“She hid her because she was afraid of the people who were looking for her.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door slammed.
Everyone froze.
Daniel’s face changed.
“They found us.””
Emma stood quickly.
“No.””
I looked toward the window.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel grabbed Ava’s hand.
“We have minutes.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
I opened it.
And my blood turned cold.
It was a picture of Ava sleeping behind the wall.
Taken yesterday.

The message underneath contained only six words:
*“You were never supposed to find her.””*
