The Girl Behind My Wall / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew My Name

The bedroom door opened slowly.

Not violently.

Not with anger.

That was what terrified me the most.

Whoever stood outside wasn’t breaking in.

He was walking into a place he believed already belonged to him.

The door creaked.

A tall figure stepped into the darkness.

I couldn’t see his face at first.

Only the outline.

The expensive coat.

The calm posture.

The complete lack of fear.

Then he stepped closer.

And my entire body went numb.

“Ryan,” he said.

I knew that voice.

Not from my waking life.

From somewhere buried deep inside my mind.

A memory I couldn’t reach.

A nightmare without an image.

“Who are you?”” I demanded.

The man smiled slightly.

“That’s the problem.””

He looked around the room.

“You don’t know yourself anymore.””

Emma moved in front of me.

“Noah, leave.””

The name hit me.

Noah.

The man’s smile widened.

“So she finally told you.””

My eyes moved to Emma.

“You know him?””

She looked terrified.

“Ryan, listen to me—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No more half-truths.””

Noah walked farther into the room.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“You’re not taking her.””

Noah looked at him.

“You always were too sentimental, Daniel.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“You destroyed enough lives.””

Noah laughed softly.

“Destroyed?””

He looked at Ava.

“I saved her.””

Ava pressed herself against me.

“He’s lying.””

Noah’s expression changed for the first time.

A flicker of anger.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

I stared at him.

“Then explain.””

The room went silent.

Noah looked directly at me.

“You and I were partners.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Emma closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She whispered:

“I knew pieces.””

Noah nodded.

“Ryan wasn’t just a man who got into a random car accident.””

He pointed at me.

“He was investigating us.””

“Us?””

Noah smiled.

“The people who created Ava’s disappearance.””

My thoughts spun.

I remembered the accident.

The hospital.

The empty years.

But nothing before it.

“Why would I investigate you?””

Noah took a step closer.

“Because you found out what we were doing.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Noah looked amused.

“Daniel, you spent years hiding in shadows. Don’t pretend you’re the honest one.””

I looked between them.

“What were you doing?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was worse than any confession.

Then Ava spoke.

“You took my mommy away.””

Everyone froze.

Noah looked at her.

“I never hurt your mother.””

Ava shook her head.

“You made Daddy forget.””

My breathing stopped.

Noah stared at her.

“How much do you remember?””

Ava’s eyes filled with tears.

“Enough.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked toward the hallway.

A sound came from downstairs.

Glass breaking.

Noah turned immediately.

Not surprised.

Prepared.

“You brought someone else?””

Emma whispered.

His face hardened.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then who?””

Noah reached into his coat.

I moved in front of Lily and Ava.

But instead of a weapon, he pulled out a small black device.

He pressed a button.

A recording started playing.

My own voice filled the room.

“Emma, if something happens to me, don’t trust anyone.””

My blood ran cold.

The recording continued.

“Not Daniel. Not Noah. Not even me.””

I stared at the device.

That was my voice.

My voice from before the accident.

“Ryan, remember this…”

The recording paused.

Then my younger voice whispered:

“The truth about Ava is bigger than all of us.””

The device clicked off.

Nobody moved.

Noah looked at me.

“You left yourself a warning.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because you knew someone would erase you.””

The bedroom window shattered.

Everyone dropped.

Ava screamed.

Daniel pulled the curtains aside.

“Someone’s outside.””

Noah looked toward the broken glass.

For the first time…

he looked afraid.

“They’re here.””

Emma grabbed my arm.

“Ryan, we have to go.””

I looked at the hidden passage.

The secret behind my wall.

The child who called me Daddy.

The wife who hid years of my life.

The man who knew my forgotten past.

Then I saw something on the floor near the window.

A small envelope.

Someone had thrown it inside.

My name was written across the front.

Not “Ryan.””

Not my full name.

A name I had never seen before.

The name I apparently used before the accident.

I opened it with shaking hands.

Inside was a single photograph.

May you like

And on the back, four words:

*“You killed your own daughter.””*
