Chapter 6: The File That Changed Everything
Dr. Carter stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like this wasn’t a house full of terrified people.
Like he hadn’t just walked into the middle of a nightmare.
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“You knew I would remember?””
He looked at the children.
Then at Emma.
“Eventually.””
Emma stepped forward.
“You told me he would never recover.””
Dr. Carter’s expression softened.
“I told you what you needed to hear.””
Her face twisted.
“You lied to me.””
“I protected you.””
“No,” she said.
Her voice shook.
“You protected yourself.””
The doctor sighed.
“Ryan, you don’t understand what happened.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s the problem, isn’t it?””
I pointed at my head.
“Everyone knows my life except me.””
The words hung in the room.
Dr. Carter looked down.
“I was there the night of the accident.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You caused it?””
“No.””
A pause.
“But I knew it would happen.””
The room froze.
Daniel moved forward.
“You knew?””
Dr. Carter ignored him.
“Ryan discovered something dangerous.””
“What?””
He opened the folder in his hand.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Medical records.
Photos.
Reports.
My name appeared everywhere.
I stepped closer.
On the first page was a line that made my blood run cold.
*Patient: Ryan Mitchell. Memory reconstruction successful.*
I looked up.
“Memory reconstruction?””
Dr. Carter nodded.
“Your memories weren’t lost.””
My throat tightened.
“They were removed.””
Silence.
Emma began crying.
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“Not everything.””
“But enough.””
She looked away.
That hurt more than anger.
Because I finally understood.
Everyone had been protecting me from the truth.
But nobody asked if I wanted to know it.
I grabbed the file.
“Why remove my memories?””
Dr. Carter looked toward Ava.
“Because of her.””
Ava stepped behind me.
“She’s a child.””
“Yes.””
His voice became quieter.
“And she’s also proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“That the people behind this never stopped.””
Suddenly, the lights went out.
Complete darkness.
Lily screamed.
I reached for both girls.
“Everyone stay close.””
Something moved in the hallway.
A door creaked.
Then another.
Daniel whispered:
“They’re inside.””
Noah looked at Dr. Carter.
“You brought them here.””
Dr. Carter shook his head.
“No.””
For once, he looked afraid.
“I didn’t.””
A flashlight beam cut through the darkness.
A figure appeared.
Not one person.
Several.
Standing at the end of the hallway.
My body reacted before my mind did.
I knew them.
Not their faces.
Their movements.
Their voices.
My missing memories were returning.
A training room.
A file.
A promise.
A warning.
Then one of the figures spoke.
“Ryan Mitchell.””
The voice was cold.
“You should have stayed forgotten.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The person removed their mask.
And my entire world stopped.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen it every morning.
At the breakfast table.
In family photographs.
In the mirror beside me.
The person standing in front of me was…
me.
Or someone who looked exactly like me.
Emma collapsed into a chair.
“No…”
Ava whispered:
“Daddy?””
The stranger smiled.
“I’m sorry, Ryan.””
He looked directly at me.
“But you’re the copy.””
May you like
And behind him, another voice said:
“The real Ryan died eight years ago.””
