Chapter 5: The Memory Beneath the Lies
I couldn’t hear anything after reading those words.
Not the broken glass.
Not the footsteps outside.
Not Emma calling my name.
Everything disappeared.
You killed your own daughter.
The sentence burned into my mind.
“No.””
I said it quietly.
Then louder.
“No.””
Emma grabbed my shoulders.
“Ryan, don’t listen to them.””
I looked at her.
“Why would they write that?””
She had no answer.
That was the answer.
Ava looked up at me.
“Daddy?””
I stepped back.
The pain on her face destroyed me.
Because she didn’t see a stranger.
She saw the only person she had been waiting for.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Her lower lip trembled.
“I know you forgot.””
Those words hurt more.
Because she wasn’t angry.
She understood.
A four-year-old child understood something I couldn’t.
Daniel picked up the photograph.
His face changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He slowly turned the picture around.
It showed me.
Eight years earlier.
Standing outside a building I didn’t recognize.
Holding Ava.
But there was something else.
A woman beside me.
A woman I had never seen.
“She’s the reason,” Daniel whispered.
Emma looked at the photograph.
Then covered her mouth.
“No.””
I stared.
“You know her?””
Emma nodded slowly.
“She was Ava’s mother.””
My stomach tightened.
“You said you were her mother.””
Emma looked at Ava.
“I raised her.””
The room felt smaller.
“Then whose child is she?””
Nobody spoke.
Finally Daniel said:
“Yours.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed at the photograph.
“Before your accident, you discovered that Ava was not just a child caught in someone else’s war.””
He looked at Noah.
“She was evidence.””
Noah leaned against the wall.
Quiet.
Watching.
I turned toward him.
“Tell me.””
Noah’s face was unreadable.
“Your memory was erased because you found the truth.””
“What truth?””
He looked at Ava.
“She was created through a program.””
The words sounded impossible.
Emma immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled.
“I knew she was special.””
I felt sick.
“Special?””
Daniel answered.
“She had information people were willing to kill for.””
Ava looked confused.
She was a child.
She didn’t understand why adults kept talking about her like she was a secret file.
I knelt beside her.
“Hey.””
She looked at me.
“No matter what anyone says…”
I swallowed.
“You’re not a thing. You’re not a secret. You’re a person.””
Ava nodded.
Then she whispered:
“I remember the day you disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She looked down.
“You promised you would come back.””
A memory flashed.
A rainy street.
A small hand in mine.
A child crying.
Then darkness.
I grabbed my head.
Pain exploded behind my eyes.
Ryan.
A voice.
My voice.
I saw myself running.
I saw Ava.
I saw a car.
Then a man standing nearby.
Noah.
I opened my eyes.
Everyone was staring.
“What did you see?”” Emma asked.
I breathed heavily.
“I remembered.””
Noah straightened.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“You weren’t the one who erased my memory.””
The room went silent.
“You were trying to stop it.””
For the first time, Noah looked genuinely shocked.
Daniel whispered:
“Ryan…”
I looked at the photograph again.
Something was wrong.
The message.
The threat.
The accusation.
Someone wanted me to believe I was the villain.
Someone wanted me afraid.
Then the front door downstairs slammed.
A voice echoed through the house.
“Ryan!””
Everyone froze.
Because that voice wasn’t Noah.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Emma.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Emma’s face drained of color.
“No…”
I looked at her.
“Who is that?””
She whispered:
“Your doctor.””
The footsteps moved closer.
Dr. Carter.
The man who had treated me after my accident.
The man who told me my memories were gone forever.
He appeared at the top of the stairs.
And he was holding my original hospital records.
May you like
“Ryan,” he said calmly.
“You were never supposed to remember.””
