Chapter 3: The Daughter I Forgot

The police sirens never came.

That was the first thing that scared me.

Because whoever was outside didn’t sound like they were afraid of being caught.

They moved calmly.

Like they owned the night.

I stood frozen in my bedroom, staring at the message on my phone.

Emma was crying.

Daniel was checking the hidden passage.

Lily held onto my leg.

And Ava…

Ava was staring at me like she had spent years waiting for this exact moment.

“Ryan,” Emma whispered.

I looked at her.

“Tell me the truth.””

She wiped her face.

“I will.””

“No more secrets.””

She nodded.

“No more.””

Daniel closed the wooden panel.

“We need to move.””

I stepped toward him.

“You don’t get to give orders in my house.””

His jaw tightened.

“I understand why you hate me.””

“I don’t even know you.””

“No,” he said quietly.

“But you know what I protected.””

He looked at Ava.

“And you know what they want.””

I turned to Emma.

“Who are they?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Emma.””

She swallowed.

“Ava’s biological father was dangerous.””

The words landed hard.

I looked at the little girl beside me.

“So she isn’t mine?””

Emma looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“She is.””

My confusion deepened.

“How can both be true?””

She reached for Ava’s hand.

“When I was pregnant, I was told I lost her.””

She glanced at Daniel.

“But Daniel found out the truth.””

Daniel continued.

“The hospital records were changed.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because someone paid them to make Ava disappear.””

My mind raced.

The hidden room.

The photographs.

The birthmark.

The years of lies.

I looked at Ava.

“Why does she call me Daddy?””

Emma looked away.

And I knew.

There was something else.

Something bigger.

“Because she remembers you.””

I frowned.

“I never met her.””

Emma shook her head.

“You did.””

A painful silence followed.

“What?””

She walked to the dresser and opened the bottom drawer.

From inside, she pulled out a small box.

My hands went cold when I saw it.

It was mine.

A box I had searched for years after the accident.

My old memories.

My old life.

“I thought this was destroyed,” I whispered.

Emma opened it.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

A small stuffed rabbit.

And a handwritten note.

My handwriting.

I picked it up.

The paper was old.

The ink had faded.

But the words were clear.

*“Ava, Daddy will always find you.””*

My knees weakened.

I remembered nothing.

Nothing.

But my handwriting was there.

My promise was there.

Ava stepped closer.

“I knew you would come back.””

A tear fell down my face before I could stop it.

Then the front door downstairs opened.

Slowly.

Not forced.

Unlocked.

Someone had a key.

Daniel immediately turned off the bedroom light.

“Everyone quiet.””

Footsteps moved through the house.

One.

Two.

Three.

Someone was walking upstairs.

Lily buried her face against me.

Ava grabbed my hand.

Emma whispered:

“Ryan…”

The footsteps stopped outside the bedroom door.

A man’s voice spoke from the other side.

“Emma.””

She went completely still.

The voice continued.

“You should have killed the secret years ago.””

My blood froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

In my dreams.

In the empty spaces of my missing memories.

The door handle slowly began to turn.

May you like

And the voice whispered:

“Open the door, Ryan. I think it’s time you remembered who you really are.””
