Chapter 6: The Debt Behind the Betrayal
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Patricia stood beside the coffee table, her hands clasped so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
Emily moved between us.
“Who is coming after her?””
Patricia shook her head.
“I don't know exactly who they are.””
“You helped transfer her house, but you don't know who you're helping?””
“I knew the company receiving the property. I didn't know what Daniel had promised them.””
I looked at the document on the table.
My father's name appeared in the property description. My name appeared beneath it, attached to a signature I had never written.
At the bottom was Patricia's signature.
She had helped someone steal my inheritance.
Now she was asking me to believe she hadn't understood why.
“Tell me about the debt,” I said.
Patricia sat down again.
“Last year, Daniel invested in a real estate development outside Atlanta. He said a group of investors had approached him with an opportunity to buy commercial property before a major redevelopment project was announced.””
“And you believed him?””
“He showed me contracts. He said everything was legitimate.””
“Did he lose the money?””
Her eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
She hesitated.
“More than half a million dollars.””
Emily let out a disbelieving laugh.
“Half a million? How could he possibly hide that?””
“He borrowed against investments. He used credit. He kept saying the project would recover.””
“And when it didn't?”” I asked.
Patricia rubbed her forehead.
“He said he had another opportunity. Someone offered to refinance the debt if he could provide additional collateral.””
“My father's house.””
She nodded.
“Daniel told me the property was worth enough to settle everything. He said you would sign the transfer because it was an investment for your baby's future.””
I stared at her.
“Did he show you my signature?””
“Yes.””
“Did you ever wonder why I hadn't mentioned it?””
Her silence was answer enough.
Emily took the document and examined the date.
“Who prepared this?””
“A firm in Atlanta.””
“Which firm?””
Patricia gave us the name.
Emily wrote it down.
“Did you see Sarah sign anything?””
“No.””
“Then why did you sign?””
Patricia's face crumpled.
“Because Daniel said the paperwork had already been approved. He told me Sarah had given him permission.””
I turned toward the window.
Outside, the pink and blue balloons were still tied to the garden chairs. The party decorations shifted in the afternoon breeze, bright and cheerful against the wreckage of my life.
My baby kicked.
I placed both hands on my stomach.
“Did Daniel know about the debt when we started IVF?””
Patricia looked confused.
“What?””
“Did he already owe that money when he decided to use Eleanor's embryo?””
She hesitated.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“He said he needed a reason to keep you from questioning his finances. He told me the fertility treatment was the most important thing in his life, and that you wouldn't leave him while you were pregnant.””
Emily stood abruptly.
“He planned to trap her!””
Patricia began crying.
“I didn't think he would go this far.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew he was lying to me. You knew he was using my father's house. You knew he was making decisions about my pregnancy without my consent.””
My voice shook.
“How many times did you tell yourself you weren't responsible?””
Patricia covered her face.
I didn't comfort her.
I couldn't.
The front door opened.
Daniel walked into the living room, followed by Robert.
His shirt was untucked, and his hair looked as if he'd been running his hands through it for hours.
He stopped when he saw the document on the table.
“Mom, what did you tell her?””
Patricia rose.
“The truth.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You had no right.””
Robert stepped forward.
“No right? You forged your wife's signature, betrayed her with her best friend, and apparently gambled away half a million dollars. What right do you think you have left?””
Daniel turned toward me.
“Sarah, I can fix this.””
I almost laughed.
“You've said that every time another secret comes out.””
“I can pay the debt.””
“With what money?””
He glanced at the document.
“The property deal was supposed to cover it.””
“My property.””
“Our future,” he said quickly.
“Stop calling everything mine and yours when it benefits you!””
He flinched.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Listen. The people involved in this deal aren't ordinary lenders. They have connections. If the transfer fails tomorrow, they could come after everything.””
“Then we tell the police.””
His expression changed.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I stared at him.
“Why not?””
“Because it will make everything worse.””
“For whom?””
He looked away.
Robert stepped between us.
“Daniel, you need to tell her exactly who these people are.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I can't.””
“You mean you won't.””
“Dad, you don't understand what they've threatened.””
“Then make me understand.””
Daniel looked at me.
“They know about the fertility records. They know about the property transfer. They have copies of documents that could destroy my career and put me in prison.””
I felt a chill move through me.
“Who gave them the documents?””
He said nothing.
“Daniel.””
His jaw tightened.
“Vanessa.””
I stared at him.
“You're blaming her again?””
“She worked at the clinic for a while. She had access to records. She knew what was happening.””
Vanessa had never told me she worked at the clinic, even temporarily.
I looked at Emily.
She was already typing the information into her phone.
“Sarah,” Daniel said, “I know I've done terrible things. But if you go to the authorities now, you could lose the house. You could lose the money. You could lose—”
“Don't finish that sentence.””
He stopped.
“You do not get to threaten me with my own child.””
“I'm not threatening you!””
“Then stop telling me what I'll lose if I refuse to protect you.””
For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely helpless.
He sat on the sofa and covered his face.
“I was trying to get us out of this.””
“By cheating on me?””
“No.””
“By hiding a debt?””
“No.””
“By using an embryo I never agreed to?””
He lowered his hands.
“I thought if we had the baby, everything would become normal again.””
I stared at him.
“Normal for whom?””
He began to cry.
I had seen Daniel cry before. When his sister died, I'd held him through the night. When our first IVF attempt failed, we'd cried together in the clinic parking lot.
But this time, I felt no instinct to reach for him.
His tears couldn't give me back the years I'd spent trusting him.
They couldn't undo the choices he'd made with my body, my money, or my future.
My phone rang.
Rebecca Shaw's name appeared on the screen.
I answered immediately.
“Mrs. Carter,” she said, “I've reviewed the additional information you sent. I need you to listen carefully.””
I put her on speaker.
“The property transfer appears to have been prepared using documentation that may not be authentic. Do not sign anything else, and do not agree to any new transaction until an independent attorney has reviewed the records.””
“What about the debt?””
“We have reason to believe the company receiving the property is connected to the same group that financed your husband's failed investment.””
Daniel stood abruptly.
“Who told you that?””
Rebecca paused.
“Mr. Carter, is that you?””
He reached for the phone.
I pulled it away.
Rebecca continued.
“Mrs. Carter, there's something else. The person who contacted me has provided a copy of an email exchange between your husband and the company's representative. It suggests the transfer was not simply intended to settle a debt.””
My throat tightened.
“What else was it intended to do?””
“According to the emails, your husband promised to deliver control of the property by tomorrow afternoon. In return, the company agreed to withhold information about a separate investigation.””
I looked at Daniel.
He had gone completely still.
“What investigation?”” I asked.
Rebecca's voice became quieter.
“The emails refer to irregularities in the fertility clinic's records and the unauthorized use of a donor embryo. They suggest your husband's debt would be forgiven if he delivered the property and prevented you from making a formal complaint.””
Emily covered her mouth.
Robert slowly turned toward his son.
“You were going to trade your wife's house to silence her?””
Daniel didn't answer.
I felt something inside me settle into place.
The affair had been betrayal.
The forged signature had been theft.
The embryo had been a violation of my trust and possibly something far more serious.
But this was different.
Daniel hadn't simply been hiding his mistakes.
He had been preparing to sacrifice my future to keep me quiet.
Rebecca asked, “Mrs. Carter, are you still there?””
“Yes.””
“I strongly recommend that you meet with independent counsel immediately. Preserve every message, photograph, and document. Don't confront the company or attempt to investigate them yourself.””
“I understand.””
After the call ended, Daniel approached me slowly.
“Sarah, please. We can work this out.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I removed my wedding ring.
His face crumpled.
“Don't do this.””
I placed the ring beside the forged property agreement.
“You already did it, Daniel.””
He stared at the ring.
I took Emily's hand and headed toward the stairs.
Behind us, Robert said something I would remember for the rest of my life.
“Son, I don't think you understand what you've done.””
Daniel answered in a broken whisper.
“No, Dad. You don't understand.””
We stopped.
Daniel looked up at me, his eyes filled with terror.
“The people who lent me the money don't just want the house.””
He swallowed.
“They know whose embryo was transferred. And they know that Eleanor left something else behind.””
My heart began pounding.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward Patricia.
She had turned as white as the photographs scattered across the backyard.
May you like
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“They know Eleanor's frozen embryos weren't the only thing the clinic kept secret.””
