Chapter 2: A Hundred Witnesses
The first photograph floated out of the box and landed against Daniel's shoe.
Then another fell onto the table.
Then another.
Within seconds, dozens of glossy prints covered the white tablecloth, scattering between the cake, the flowers, and the tiny blue-and-pink decorations.
No balloons rose into the air.
No colored confetti burst above our heads.
Instead, the backyard filled with photographs of my husband cheating on me.
The first showed Daniel kissing Vanessa outside the Grandview Hotel.
The second showed them holding hands in a restaurant.
The third showed Vanessa sitting on his lap in a private booth, her fingers curled around the back of his neck.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
A fork clattered onto a plate.
Somewhere near the fence, a child asked his mother why everyone was looking at the pictures.
Daniel bent down and snatched the nearest photograph.
His face changed as he read the date printed in the corner.
“Sarah,” he said quietly.
“What the hell is this?””
I picked up another photograph and held it high enough for the guests behind him to see.
“Evidence.””
His jaw tightened.
“Put that down.””
“Why?””
“Because you're making a scene.””
I almost laughed.
“You're right, Daniel. I should have waited until after dessert to announce that my husband has been sleeping with my best friend.””
A murmur swept through the crowd.
Vanessa lowered her phone.
Her lips parted, but no words came out.
My sister Emily stepped forward and picked up a photograph from the grass.
She studied it, then turned toward Vanessa.
“You told me you were at your mother's house last Thursday.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I was going through something. I didn't know how to explain it.””
“You were going through something?”” Emily repeated.
“You were kissing my sister's husband in a hotel!””
“Emily, please.””
“No. You don't get to say please now.””
Daniel grabbed my elbow and leaned toward me.
“We need to talk privately.””
I pulled away so sharply that his hand dropped.
“You had three weeks to talk privately. You chose to spend them lying to my face.””
“Sarah, you're pregnant. You're emotional. You're not thinking clearly.””
The words struck harder than his grip had.
I looked at him.
“Did you just blame my pregnancy for the photographs?””
He glanced at the guests.
“That isn't what I meant.””
“Then explain what you meant.””
He said nothing.
His father, Robert, rose from his chair near the patio.
“Daniel,” he said, his voice low and dangerous, “tell me those pictures aren't real.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Dad, this is a private matter.””
Robert stepped around the table.
“Your wife is standing here in front of our family, carrying your child. You don't get to call this private anymore.””
“I made a mistake.””
Vanessa suddenly looked up.
“A mistake?””
Daniel turned toward her so quickly that she flinched.
“Not another word.””
That was the moment the crowd truly understood.
Not because of the photographs.
Because Vanessa had spoken like a woman who expected something more than an apology.
Patricia hurried forward, her heels clicking against the patio stones.
“Sarah, sweetheart, this is completely inappropriate.””
I stared at my mother-in-law.
“Inappropriate?””
“Whatever happened between Daniel and Vanessa, you should have discussed it at home. Look at these people. Think about the family.””
“Which family, Patricia? The one I married into, or the one that has been lying to me?””
Her cheeks flushed.
“You're humiliating my son.””
“He managed to humiliate himself without my help.””
A few guests lowered their heads to hide their expressions.
Patricia's mouth tightened.
“You need to calm down before you do something you'll regret.””
I placed one hand on my stomach.
“I've spent three weeks being calm. I've spent three weeks watching my husband kiss me goodbye before going to meet another woman. I've spent three weeks wondering whether I was imagining things because the people I trusted most kept telling me everything was fine.””
My voice shook, but I didn't stop.
“Today, I decided I was done protecting their lies.””
Vanessa began crying.
“Sarah, I never wanted to hurt you.””
I turned toward her.
“You came to my house last Sunday and helped me choose the decorations for this party.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“I know.””
“You touched my belly and told my baby how lucky he or she was to have Daniel as a father.””
“I know.””
“You sat at my kitchen table while I told you how scared I was about becoming a mother.””
Her shoulders shook.
“Please stop.””
I stepped closer.
“No, Vanessa. You don't get to ask me to stop remembering.””
Daniel seized the opportunity to pull her aside.
“Vanessa, go to your car.””
She stared at him.
“You promised me we would tell her.””
The entire backyard went silent again.
Daniel's face hardened.
“Shut your mouth.””
My heart began pounding.
I looked from him to her.
“Tell me what?””
Vanessa covered her face.
Daniel grabbed her wrist.
“Get in the car. Now.””
Robert moved between them.
“Take your hands off her.””
For a moment, the two men stared at each other.
Then Daniel released her.
Vanessa stumbled backward, clutching her handbag against her chest.
Emily returned to the table and began gathering the scattered photographs.
“Sarah,” she said, “there's something else in here.””
At the bottom of the box lay a thick envelope I hadn't placed there.
I frowned.
“I didn't put that inside.””
Emily carefully opened it.
Several documents slid onto the table.
The first was a photograph of Daniel and Vanessa sitting across from an attorney.
The second showed Patricia standing beside them outside the law office.
The third was a close-up of a document bearing the name of my late father.
My father's house.
The home he'd left me when he died.
I reached for the paper.
It was a property transfer agreement, listing Daniel as the recipient of an interest in the house.
At the bottom was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.
Almost.
But I'd never signed it.
I read the document twice, struggling to understand the legal language.
Then I saw the date.
Three weeks earlier.
The same week the anonymous photographs had started arriving.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “what is this?””
He lunged for the document.
Robert caught his arm.
“Don't you dare.””
“Dad, let go!””
“Not until you tell me why you're trying to take your wife's house.””
Daniel's face twisted.
“It's not what you think.””
I held the paper against my chest.
“Then tell me what it is.””
He looked at Patricia.
And for the first time that afternoon, my mother-in-law appeared genuinely afraid.
She backed away from the table.
“Sarah, darling, I can explain.””
I stared at her.
“Did you know he was cheating?””
She hesitated.
That tiny pause told me everything.
“You knew,” I said.
“It's complicated.””
“Did you help him forge my signature?””
Her eyes widened.
“Don't use that word!””
“Then tell me whose signature this is!””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her handbag and headed for the gate.
Daniel shouted after her.
“Vanessa, get back here!””
She didn't stop.
Instead, she turned once, tears streaming down her face.
“I told you this was going to happen!””
Then she disappeared through the gate.
My phone vibrated against my dress.
Another message from the anonymous number.
The affair is only the beginning. Look at the final photograph.
I stared at the words.
My hands had started shaking.
Emily noticed.
“What is it?””
I showed her the screen.
She looked at the envelope, then reached beneath the remaining documents.
Her fingers touched something hidden in a narrow pocket.
A sealed white envelope.
My name was written across the front.

And beneath it, in unfamiliar handwriting, were four words.
*THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR BABY.*
