Chapter 4: The Name on the Embryo Record
“My sister?”” I whispered.
Patricia's scream still echoed across the backyard, but I barely heard it. I was staring at the name printed on the clinic record, waiting for the letters to rearrange themselves into something that made sense.
Eleanor Carter.
Daniel's older sister had died eleven years earlier in a car accident.
I had met her only through photographs and family stories. Patricia kept Eleanor's portrait above the fireplace, and every Christmas, she placed a white candle beneath it.
According to Daniel, Eleanor had always wanted children but had never gotten the chance.
Now her name was on my baby's medical record.
I looked up at my husband.
“Tell me this is a mistake.””
Daniel's lips parted.
“Sarah, please let me explain.””
“Was this Eleanor's embryo?””
He glanced at his mother.
That tiny movement told me he already knew what the answer would do to me.
“Daniel!””
“Yes,” he finally said.
“The embryo came from Eleanor's eggs.””
My hand flew to my mouth.
“How?””
He dragged a trembling hand through his hair.
“Before the accident, Eleanor had frozen her eggs. She was planning to have a child someday. After she died, Mom kept the records.””
Patricia shook her head violently.
“That's not how it happened!””
Daniel rounded on her.
“Then tell her the truth!””
For the first time since the party began, his anger seemed directed at someone other than me.
Patricia clutched her handbag.
“Eleanor wanted her children to remain in the family. She told me that.””
“Did she tell you to use her eggs without telling me?”” I demanded.
“No!””
“Then why is her name on this record?””
Patricia opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Robert picked up the document from the table. His face grew darker with every line he read.
“Daniel, this says the transfer was performed under a special authorization. Where is Sarah's consent?””
Daniel looked down.
“I handled it.””
Robert's voice rose.
“You handled it? What does that mean?””
“The clinic needed additional paperwork. Sarah was already under so much stress. I thought I could make the process easier.””
I stared at him.
“You thought you could make it easier by making medical decisions for me?””
“No. I thought—”
“You thought I wouldn't find out?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Sarah, I wanted you to have a baby. I wanted us to be a family.””
“We were a family!””
My voice cracked so loudly that several guests flinched.
“We were a family before you decided my consent was an inconvenience!””
Emily moved beside me, placing a protective hand on my back.
“Sarah, breathe. Please.””
I tried.
But every breath felt like swallowing broken glass.
For years, I'd blamed myself for our failed treatments. I'd wondered whether my body was defective, whether I was somehow failing Daniel, whether he secretly regretted marrying me.
He had held me through those nights.
He had told me none of it was my fault.
And all the while, he had been planning something behind my back.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Why were you involved?””
She wiped her face with the back of her hand.
“Because Daniel came to me after Eleanor's records were found. He said the embryo had been preserved and that his mother wanted it used.””
“And you agreed?””
“I thought you knew.””
“You attended my fertility appointments!””
“I know.””
“You sat beside me while I signed paperwork!””
“I know, Sarah!””
Her voice broke.
“I believed Daniel when he said everything was legal. When I realized there were problems with the consent forms, I told him to stop.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You told me to stop because you were afraid of getting caught.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“I told you to stop because Sarah was your wife!””
“Then why didn't you tell her?””
“Because I was sleeping with you, Daniel! Because I was ashamed! Because every time I tried to leave, you told me you'd lose everything if I spoke!””
The guests erupted into whispers.
I looked at Daniel.
“You used my best friend to help you hide this?””
He didn't answer.
Vanessa continued, her voice shaking.
“Daniel told me the embryo was the only way to give you a biological connection to his family. He said Eleanor's wishes mattered more than the paperwork. Patricia agreed.””
“Stop making it sound noble,” Emily snapped.
“You both lied to her.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.””
Patricia suddenly stepped toward me.
“Sarah, listen to me. Eleanor would have loved this baby. You have to understand what this means to our family.””
I stared at her.
“What it means to your family?””
“Eleanor was my daughter. I lost her. This baby is the closest thing I'll ever have to getting her back.””
The pain in her voice was real.
For one brief moment, I saw the grieving mother beneath the controlling woman.
Then she reached for the clinic record.
“And you cannot let a misunderstanding destroy that.””
I pulled the paper away.
“A misunderstanding? You used your dead daughter's eggs to create a child inside me without making sure I understood what I was agreeing to.””
Patricia's expression hardened.
“You're carrying Eleanor's child. That should be a blessing.””
“It's my child too,” I said.
“I'm the one carrying this baby. I'm the one whose body is changing. And you all treated me like an empty room you could put your family's future inside.””
Robert slowly lowered the document.
“Patricia, did you know the consent was incomplete?””
She looked at him.
“Robert, please.””
“Answer me.””
She said nothing.
He closed his eyes.
Then he removed his wedding ring and placed it on the table.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stared at his father.
“Dad, don't do this.””
Robert looked at him with an expression I had never seen before.
“I raised you to protect the people you love. Not to manipulate them into giving you what you want.””
He turned toward me.
“Sarah, I'm sorry.””
Those two words nearly broke me.
Because they were the first honest words I'd heard from anyone in Daniel's family all afternoon.
My phone vibrated again.
Another message from the anonymous number.
The embryo record isn't the only document they falsified. Ask the clinic who authorized the transfer—and ask why your father's house was part of the agreement.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Daniel.
“What does my father's house have to do with my baby?””
His face changed.
Vanessa backed away from him.
And Patricia whispered, “Oh, God.””
That was when I realized the embryo had never been the only thing they wanted from me.

They had been planning something much bigger.
And someone had just given me the next piece of the puzzle.
