Chapter 3: The Embryo They Hid From Me

For several seconds, I couldn't open the envelope.

The backyard was still crowded with guests, but the sounds seemed to come from far away. People whispered beneath the balloon arch. Someone guided the children toward the house. Robert stood beside the table, watching Daniel as if he no longer recognized his own son.

My eyes remained fixed on the envelope.

The truth about your baby.

I had spent three years dreaming about those words in a different context.

Three years of blood tests, hormone injections, and appointments scheduled around work. Three years of watching other women announce pregnancies while I smiled and pretended their happiness didn't hurt.

When the fertility specialist finally told us one of our embryos had implanted successfully, I had cried so hard that Daniel had to hold me upright.

He'd kissed my forehead and whispered, “We're going to be parents, Sarah.””

I'd believed him.

Now I looked at the envelope and wondered whether the most important moment of my life had been built on another lie.

“Sarah,” Emily said gently, “you don't have to read this here.””

I shook my head.

“If I wait, they'll find another way to explain it away.””

Daniel took one step toward me.

“Give me that envelope.””

I tightened my grip.

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent it is trying to destroy our family.””

I stared at him.

“Your family? The one you apparently built with Vanessa?””

His eyes flashed.

“This isn't funny.””

“I'm not laughing.””

Patricia hurried around the table.

“Sarah, please. Whatever is in there, we should discuss it somewhere private.””

“Why does everyone keep asking me to go somewhere private?””

“Because you're upset!””

“I'm upset because my husband cheated on me. I'm upset because someone forged my signature on a document involving my father's house. And now someone has sent me an envelope suggesting there's something wrong with my pregnancy.””

I held it up.

“If there's an innocent explanation, why are you all afraid of what's inside?””

Nobody answered.

I tore the envelope open.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel, Vanessa, and Patricia standing outside a private fertility clinic. Daniel wore the navy coat I'd bought him the previous Christmas. Vanessa held a folder against her chest. Patricia stood beside them, her hand resting on Vanessa's shoulder.

I recognized the building immediately.

It was the clinic where Daniel and I had undergone our IVF treatment.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

Two months before I became pregnant.

Beneath it were six words.

Ask Daniel what happened to the embryos.

The ground seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Daniel.””

He stared at the photograph.

For one brief moment, his face was completely empty.

Then fear rushed into his eyes.

“Who gave you that?””

I swallowed.

“What happened to our embryos?””

He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

Patricia stepped forward.

“Sarah, you need to understand that fertility treatment can be very complicated.””

I turned toward her.

“I understand the treatment perfectly well. I was the one taking the injections. I was the one lying on an operating table while doctors collected my eggs.””

My voice cracked.

“I was the one who signed every consent form.””

Robert looked from the photograph to his son.

“Daniel, what is she talking about?””

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“Dad, please don't get involved.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“You involved all of us when you brought this disgrace into your wife's home.””

Vanessa reappeared at the gate.

She hadn't left after all.

Her handbag hung from one shoulder, and her face was so pale that the pink of her dress looked almost artificial.

“I need to tell her something,” she said.

Daniel spun around.

“No, you don't.””

Vanessa ignored him.

She approached the table, keeping several feet between herself and Daniel.

“Sarah, I swear I never meant for you to find out like this.””

I felt a coldness settle in my chest.

“Then tell me the truth.””

She looked at Daniel.

He shook his head once.

“Vanessa. Don't.””

Her lower lip trembled.

“You said she would never find out.””

Every person close enough to hear her went silent.

I stared at her.

“Find out what?””

Vanessa pressed her fingers against her mouth, then lowered them.

“After your second IVF attempt failed, Daniel came to me. He said you were devastated. He said you were putting so much pressure on yourself that you couldn't think clearly anymore.””

I remembered that period.

The sleepless nights. The hormone crashes. Daniel holding me while I cried over another negative pregnancy test.

My stomach tightened.

“What did he ask you to do?””

Vanessa's eyes filled again.

“He told me the clinic had offered another option.””

“What option?””

She looked down at the photograph.

“He said there was an embryo that could be used for your next transfer. He told me the paperwork was already being handled.””

I could barely hear my own voice.

“Whose embryo?””

Daniel slammed his palm against the table.

“That's enough!””

A glass tipped over and shattered against the patio stones.

Several guests gasped.

Robert grabbed Daniel by the shoulder.

“Lower your voice!””

Daniel shook him off.

“You don't understand what's happening!””

“Then explain it!””

Daniel looked around at the crowd, at the photographs scattered across the table, at the woman he'd married and the woman he'd betrayed her with.

Then he looked at me.

“Sarah, I was trying to give you a child.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“By doing what?””

He swallowed.

“I made a decision.””

“You made a decision about my body?””

“No. That's not what—”

“You made a decision about our embryos?””

He said nothing.

I stepped away from the table.

“Daniel, answer me. Did the clinic transfer an embryo that I hadn't consented to use?””

His silence lasted only a few seconds.

But those seconds were enough.

My knees weakened.

Emily caught my arm.

“Sarah, sit down.””

“No.””

I couldn't sit. If I sat, I was afraid I would never stand again.

Vanessa began speaking quickly, as if the words were burning her tongue.

“He said you had agreed. He said you knew everything. I believed him at first.””

“At first?””

She squeezed her handbag.

“Then I saw the documents.””

“What documents?””

“The consent forms.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had turned gray.

Vanessa continued.

“Your signature was on them, but Daniel told me he'd handled the paperwork because you were overwhelmed. He said the clinic had approved everything.””

“I never signed those forms.””

“I know that now.””

I stared at her.

“How long have you known?””

She looked away.

The answer was written across her face before she spoke.

“Several months.””

I heard someone in the crowd whisper, “Oh, my God.””

Emily's fingers tightened around mine.

“You let her believe everything was normal?””

Vanessa started crying harder.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?”” Emily demanded.

“Losing him?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Of what he would do if I told her.””

Daniel moved toward her.

“You're lying.””

She flinched.

“You told me Sarah would never find out whose embryo they transferred!””

The words rang across the backyard.

My entire body went numb.

I looked at my husband.

“Whose embryo, Daniel?””

He shook his head.

“Sarah, listen to me.””

“Whose?””

“I can explain.””

“Then explain!””

His eyes darted toward Patricia.

That was when I understood there was another person involved.

Not just Daniel.

Not just Vanessa.

His mother had been there from the beginning.

Robert noticed the exchange.

“Patricia,” he said slowly, “what did you do?””

She backed away.

“I did nothing.””

Vanessa let out a bitter, broken laugh.

“You signed the documents.””

Patricia's face crumpled.

“Be quiet!””

“You told Daniel it was the only way to protect the family!””

“Vanessa, stop!””

I felt my baby move beneath my hand.

A small, unmistakable kick.

I pressed my palm against my belly and looked at Daniel.

“Tell me my baby is mine.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Sarah—”

“Tell me the truth.””

He took a step toward me, but I stepped back.

For the first time in six years, he seemed to understand that I wasn't going to let him touch me simply because he wanted to.

“I love you,” he whispered.

“That isn't an answer.””

He looked down.

Then, so quietly that I almost missed it, he said, “The embryo wasn't one of the embryos created from your eggs.””

The world stopped.

I heard Emily gasp.

Robert muttered something under his breath.

Patricia began crying.

I couldn't move.

For years, I had imagined my child as the result of everything Daniel and I had endured together. Every appointment, every failed attempt, every painful injection had led me to believe that this pregnancy was the miracle we'd fought for.

Now my husband was telling me that something fundamental had been changed without my knowledge.

I forced the words out.

“Whose embryo was it?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

“I took a copy of the original clinic record,” she whispered.

“I thought you deserved to know.””

Daniel lunged toward her.

Robert blocked him again.

“Don't move.””

Vanessa placed the paper on the table.

At the top was the clinic's name.

Below it were the transfer date, the laboratory reference number, and a section listing the genetic source of the embryo.

My fingers hovered above the document.

I didn't want to read it.

But I had spent too long letting other people decide which truths I could handle.

I picked it up.

The first line confirmed that the embryo had not come from my stored eggs.

The second listed the donor designation.

The third contained a name.

A name I knew.

A name that made the photographs of Daniel and Vanessa suddenly seem like the smallest betrayal of all.

I raised my eyes toward my husband.

May you like

“Daniel,” I whispered, “why is your sister's name on my baby's embryo record?””

And when Patricia heard the question, she screamed.
